Fc17 nvidia kmdls?
Hello Guys,

Tried to install nvidia on fc17 64 bit and got this :

Which leads to question , based on an old film from 1974 (Peter Graves)
, Where have all the kmdls gone ?

What usually happens, I believe, is that kmdls disappear automagically
shortly after a new kernel appears. New ones only appear after action
by Axel. Either build your own or avoid going to a new kernel until you
know that the kmdls you need are there.

You cannot be certain that the repo will always carry a full working set
of packages. This has been true for years.

Yes, el6 seems a bit different. I found kmdls for a kernel that wasn't
available through sl6 and had to get it from CentOS. But for f16 at
present there are just 3 nvidia kmdls for 3.4.7-1, while the kernel
offered by fedora-updates is now 3.4.9-1. You just have to be aware of
what is and is not available when you want to make changes.

Cheers,

John

Agree . But I am getting a feeling that the kmdl's for fc17 are failing
to get built or not making it into the repo . We just got a build of
long lived nvidia drivers for all distributions . I have a el6 machine
and have upgraded all nvidia packages incl kmdl . For fc17 all files but
the kmdl were there . So even on the new build there is no kmdl for fc17 .

Milorad:

I've noticed the same thing and started to build my own kmdls. If you
look through the list archive, I've been posting with Paulo about how
to build kmdls myself and he gave me a lot of good information in that
series of emails. Paulo also has an excellent guide here:
http://people.atrpms.net/~pcavalcanti/LCG_kernel_modules.html#user.
The one surprising thing we discovered recently is that you can't
build kmdls under KDE. You can under Gnome or by remotely connecting
to the computer on which you are building the kmdls.

The process is actually quite simple once you put together the pieces
(and set yum so that it leaves the fakeroot package alone).

I'm just about to upgrade to FC17, so will these KMDLs be available on ATRPMS or do I need
to look elsewhere or build myself?

thanks

You are the only person who knows which kmdls you are likely to want.
Which do you have installed in f16? Check to see if the corresponding
kmdls are present in the f17 repo and if they match an available f17
kernel. If you can find a full set you should be ok to go. It might be
prudent to download and keep the kmdls and kernel packages in case any
of them disappear before you actually do the upgrade.

Hello Guys,

If we look in those fc17 repos on atrpms , there will be no kmdls there
for any kernel . I am suspecting that the modules are not building
automatically as they should . It may have something to do with errors
such as :

Error: Package:
nvidia-graphics295.40-kmdl-3.3.7-1.fc17-295.40-144.fc17.x86_64 (atrpms)
Requires: modutils >= 2.4.14

These types of errors I was seeing and had to force install kmdls in
with --nodeps a few months ago .

The issue is that module-init-tools has obsoleted modutils just in fc17
and we probably need to modify the SPEC here . That would be my guess .

Best Regards
Milorad

Yes, after looking at the f17 repo I see only the yum kmdl - no others
at all. The kernel on fedora 17 updates is 3.5.2-3, released on 22-Aug,
just 3 days ago.

As I said earlier, I think kernel release triggers removal of
non-matching kmdls when the next auto-update of Axels's repo occurs, but
a new build may need action by Axel. I don't know when that will
happen. The changes you mention above may delay things even then. The
most recent set of updates - vlc etc - was mainly Paulo's stuff.

My systems seem to be working well, given their known limitations and my
habits of use (SL6/Myth25.2/Intelgraphics and f16/Myth24.3/nVidia
302.17) and I'm in 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' mode for the time
being :-)

Cheers,

John

All:

Just as a test, I tried building nvidia-graphics302 for 3.5.2-1.fc17
and it seems to have worked. I used Paulo's guide and his scripts. I
have not installed these files as my FC17 machine has an ATI card, but
here is what I got from the build:
3241357 Aug 27 12:17 nvidia-graphics302.17-302.17-147.fc17.x86_64.rpm
74681 Aug 27 12:17 nvidia-graphics302.17-devel-302.17-147.fc17.x86_64.rpm
3519125 Aug 27 12:20
nvidia-graphics302.17-kmdl-3.5.2-1.fc17-302.17-147.fc17.x86_64.rpm
19020893 Aug 27 12:17 nvidia-graphics302.17-libs-302.17-147.fc17.x86_64.rpm

There doesn't seem to be any need to update the SPEC file. I am not
sure why Axel hasn't built the files.

Just in case someone hadn't noticed:

kmdls for 3.5.3-1 are there now for recent nvidia drivers.
