Good day,
I begin with apache. I'm trying to configure httpd.conf under window xp. The best result I obtained is a Dos window containing:
[Wed Jan 02 15:58:54 2002] [warn] pid file c:/program files/apache group/apache/logs/httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shotdown of previous Apache run?
Apache/1.3.9 <Win32> running...

I would appreciate to get an example of a working httpd.conf so I better understand which kings of settings are needed.
Do I speak to the right list for that?

Upgrade to a more recent version. The win32 version of apache has improved
immensely since then.
