Apache 0.8.4
Hi... me again.

I just found and downloaded Apache 0.8.4, and installed it... looks good.
Seems to work. However, I do have a few comments on the -dist conf files:

First, I noticed that although the new entries I made are there, you
didn't use my new header text for the three files... I worked long and
hard hours on those words... and you had the _indecency_ to override them
for what you had back in 0.8.3. *sniff* But that's all right, because I'm
good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggonit, people like me. :)

Ok, next, some errors that I made in revising them (you people should
know better than to trust me):

In httpd.conf, I meant "also", not "alto". I think.

In srm.conf, somehow the description for AddType got placed before
AddEncoding, not before the AddType entries like you would imagine.
Informal studies show this was present in 0.8.2 as well, before I came
along, so I feel a bit better. Should be fixed, though.

However, I did forget the extension for the httpd/send-as-is (which I
still think should be message/rfc822) line. So change that to "#AddType
httpd/send-asis asis" or something please.

Thanks.

Hi... me again.

I just found and downloaded Apache 0.8.4, and installed it... looks good.
Seems to work. However, I do have a few comments on the -dist conf files:

Oh, crud. I still wasn't sure that was the final cut, and I'd decided
to sleep on it, but it's the morning and I was going to announce it
anyway. So, folks, there's a 0.8.4 build on hyperreal, in httpd/dist
(both compressed and gzipped --- I didn't realize it made a 40%
difference!). This includes everything previously advertised as
"stuff in my sandbox", and additionally one out of two of drtr's
escaping patches.

(I'm holding off on the one that messes with the sub_req stuff until I
hear that someone at a heavy includes-using site has tried it, and it
doesn't break anything --- it looks good to me, but I only trust my
eyeballs so far, and I'm not in a position to give this particular
piece of code a workout). For the record, full changes below.

All reasonable. If you could supply a patch for these, it would
minimize the possibility of further screwups on my part.

The full change list follows:

Changes with Apache 0.8.4

*) Changes to server-pool management parms --- renamed current
StartServers to MinSpareServers, created separate StartServers
parameter which means what it says, and renamed MaxServers to
MaxSpareServers (though the old name still works, for NCSA 1.4
back-combatibility). The old names were generally regarded as
too confusing. Also altered "docs" in sample config files.

*) More improvements to default config files ---
sample directives (commented out) for XBitHack, BindAddress,
CacheNegotiatedDocs, VirtualHost; decent set of AddLanguage
defaults, AddTypes for send-as-is and imagemap magic types, and
improvements to samples for DirectoryIndex [Alexei Kosut]

*) Yet more improvements to default config files --- changes to
Alexei's sample AddLanguage directives, and sample LanguagePriority
[ Florent Guillaume ]

*) Set config file locations properly if not set in httpd.conf
[ David Robinson ]

*) Don't escape URIs in internal redirects multiple times; don't
do that when translating PATH_INFO to PATH_TRANSLATED either.
[ David Robinson ]

*) Corrected spelling of "Required" in 401 error reports [Andrew Wilson]

Ok. <http://www.nueva.pvt.k12.ca.us/~akosut/conf.patch> has a context diff
between the conf files in 0.8.4 and ones with the changes I just
suggested, plus I fixed some more spelling errors. Enjoy. But could
someone else please check over these carefully before anything is done
with them, to make sure they are completely error-free? Thanks.

Oops... yerright. Silly me, I input the wrong file into diff (well, the
right file, but an older version). Ok, revised patch, still at

Well, I have no deep feelings on the matter either.

Good.

P.S. No one here cares, I'm sure, but I'm going to be away from any sort
of computer for the next three days... any mail sent to me before next
Wednesday won't be read until then.

Thanks!

hmmmm... The AddType/AddDescription thing isn't changed here, nor the
send-as-is stuff. Also, we may or may not want to advertise the
locations of specific doc files (as opposed to a top-level pointer to
the documentation, which would leave us with a little more freedom to
reorgainze, at the price of some convenience for users); I have no
deep feelings on the matter, but I thought I'd raise it.

Just making sure nothing falls between the cracks...
