Could it be that you are compiling against the 2.4.52 header files?

If you have headers installed, let's say in /usr/include/apache2, compiling a
new version might pick up previous versions headers and produce such errors.

Yes, that was it... Recompiled ok with headers 2.4.53. Shouldn't the build
process use the headers from the new source tree by default?

Yes, that was it... Recompiled ok with headers 2.4.53. Shouldn't the build
process use the headers from the new source tree by default?
