Hey Chris,
The most inspiring thing, what will have a huge effect on our community
happened in the last week or so. It started with a proof of concept by Hay
Kranen [1]. It works and it brought search to Commons. Multi lingual search
to Commons. In the example you search for a "kamsalamander" in Russian.
Contrast that with the current Commons that is hardly usable and English
only.

After quite a bit of attention seeking, the official prototype of the multi
lingual search of the Wikimedia Foundation made its entry. Boy is THAT an
important experience. To given you one example, an English Wikipedia
article had the name in Urdu for a prominent Pakistani scientist. Adding
this label to Wikidata now enables people in Pakistan to find [2] ???? ????
???? ? . People are looking for cats in Czech [3]... What this changes is
that Commons, the "collection of 61,807,201 freely usable media files to
which anyone can contribute" becomes "a collection of 61,807,201 freely
usable media files to which anyone can use".

It does not stop there. For any Wikipedia article, in any language, we can
now provide a pre filled search that will show what Commons has in
media files. Let this sink in...

It is a prototype and yes, it needs major improvements to make it sing.
That is however not what is important in a Wiki environment. It took months
for the original Commons to be usable as the place where images were to be
found and could be linked from Wikipedia articles. Special:MediaSearch is
already functional. Functional in all our languages. What will immediately
improve it are labels in Wikidata and "depict" statements on pictures.

When we are to know how important this is, collect statistics on the use
of Special:MediaSearch. Split this in the language it is used for and
market the hell out of this.. Expand our public, make Commons what it
should be; the most important resource of freely available media files.

This is imho the most important new functionality since Wikidata.

Hi Chris,
this is a great initiative and I would love to nominate at least 2 projects to spread their energy and motivation as well as to acknowledge their work.
However, as a European with some attentiveness for data reduction and data economy I wonder why you have to retain contact information from me and the nominees unless we ask you to delete them. I got a first rejection from a potential project just because of this kind of data collecting. That’s sad and I believe we as a community could do better.

Good initiative. I'd like to share a couple of India-related stories I can
think of and will get back with that (or I'll email you in person, if that
works, kindly let me know). Thanks for planning this.

A side-comment: It does not look good if links, specially the privacy
policy link which states "your privacy is important to us " is itself
masked by YAMM (yet another mail merge), that's a third party. I used the
MMS tool a few times a long time ago, did not like it. They track too many
things like email clicked, email opened etc.
I was also not aware that Qualtrics records IP addresses.

contract information so we can reach out if we have more clarifying
questions. The survey didn't properly indicate this, but those fields are
optional. You can submit a nomination without filling out those fields, but
we may be unable to follow up.

Thanks Chris, and of course I understand that. Retaining contact information is totally fine as long as you need it to do what you want do do. The question is how long you have to retain it. Here you are going to retain it indefinitely, even if there won’t be any contact at all with regards to the nomination. And it is up to the people to ask for deletion. Another (and yes, as said, a very European) option would be to delete this data after the survey and all communication based on it is done. It would be great if we accept and consider in future surveys that our views and concepts about personal data like names, birthdays and mail addresses differ and that people may shy away from concepts that look like collecting personal data to just have it in stock.
And I stop now. I didn’t want to hijack this initiative for a side aspect. It's great and I'm looking forward to see great projects of our movement, done by people in other parts of the world.
