defending the wiki
Hello,

There was some wiki butchery done.
Meanwhile it is reverted.
( See http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/Special:Recentchanges
for mor information about it )

Could a captcha[1] be added to the syslinux wiki
to have some form of defence?

Cheers
Geert Stappers

Isn't blocking ip's a problem with dynamic ip's?

May be - collateral damage.

By the way: "ip's" isn't the plural of "ip".

And why do you people want to block protocols? =)

Could you explain why?

Is it the only reason to not have another defense level?

Every way could be defeated, but simple mesures allow to let 80% (if not 99%) of
spam away.

A captcha seems to make more sense, but I'm not 100% sure how to insert
one into MediaWiki. I might have to ask John for help.

I don't like them. In the last weeks I had to use them on several pages
- it was horrible. Most times I had to guess the characters (they were
nearly unreadable).
Blocking the write access for a range of IP addresses is a simplier way,
it blocks mostly korean, romanian and brasil addresses. I can live with
this restrictions.

"abbreviations whose plural would be ambiguous" ... I had preferred
"IPs" which isn't (aren't?) ambiguous.

Thanks. Should "ips" (or "IPs") be considered ambiguous or not?

Pretty much up to the writer and context, I would think. In some
context there is potential confusion with IPS (instructions per second,
for example); or with the word "eyepiece". In other words, this is well
inside the grey area where it depends on context and author's style
preferences, I would think.

Could http://recaptcha.net/plugins/mediawiki/ be a help?

There are many different kind of captchas - they don't all involve
reading graphically obfuscated characters.

"What is two by two?" is also a captcha. answer=4 :-)
