If your zone is dynamically updated when you connect, you might use
something like a:urlsoftware.com. However, I'd suggest that you relay
through a permanently connected host, or at least get a fixed address.

One nuisance directly related to SPF checking is that some software,
e.g. spamassassin, can be run after a message has been handed to the
target MX --even a few hours after-- by retrieving the connecting
address from the relevant "Received" header field. There are more
shortcomings when using dynamic or residential IPs for sending mail,
as you probably know.

Don't bother it won't work.

You really shouldn't be running a mail server from a dynamic IP anyway.

You should relay from a fixed host like your ISP or some other service
provider?

I'd put it slightly differently. An SPF record using whatever stable hostname you use in your MX will have roughly the same reliability (which is not very good). Running a mail server on dynamic IP should really be avoided.

Re: How to add spf if ip is dynamic [ In reply to ]
If I understand you, you're saying your mail is sometimes being rejected
due to SPF. This is not possible, because your domain does not have an
SPF record. Your mail is being rejected for some other reason. Adding an
SPF record will not help resolve this other problem.

Your mail is likely being rejected BECAUSE you have a dynamic IP. There
are DNS blacklists which exist for the sole purpose of rejecting mail
from IPs that are part of dynamic or end-user address ranges, such as
http://www.spamhaus.org/pbl/.

As others have suggested, running a mail server on a dynamic IP will
inherently be problematic and you should obtain a static IP.. then look
into implementing SPF.

Re: How to add spf if ip is dynamic [ In reply to ]
we are providing web hosting so our mail server have static ip but our

use proxy server for mail that time they have dynamic ip on that time they
got failure notice b'coz that time their dynamic ip show in mail so mail is
reject reason of sender ip is not a mail server ip. in this case how can i
add spf record.

Re: How to add spf if ip is dynamic [ In reply to ]
Your client's outlook should be configured to use your mail server as
it's outbound SMTP server. Then your server delivers the mail to the
proper MX record from its static IP. Based on your failure notices, this
appears to be the case, so the client's static IP has nothing to do with
this.

The failure notice says that 74.86.58.248 is not allowed to send as
phenixvp.com. An email was sent from your server using phenixvp.com in
the envelope sender or possibly HELO.

phenixvp.com does have an SPF record which says only phenixvp.com and
the hosts listed in the MX records for phenixvp.com are permitted to
send mail:

$ host -t txt phenixvp.com
phenixvp.com descriptive text "v=spf1 a mx ~all" ""

$ host phenixvp.com
phenixvp.com has address 74.86.56.202
phenixvp.com mail is handled by 21 mx.cleanmailgateway.in.

$ host mx.cleanmailgateway.in
mx.cleanmailgateway.in has address 74.54.47.34

Is phenixvp.com your domain or do you host mail for this domain? If not,
why is your server sending mail as phenixvp.com? Is your client's
outlook just misconfigured and should be using phenixvp.com's mail
server instead of yours to send their phenixvp.com mail?

ok, change the phenixvp.com spf record to:

v=spf1 ip4:74.86.58.248 ip4:74.54.47.34 ip4:74.86.56.202 ~all

That will allow 74.86.58.248 to send email and will also make the spf record
faster since the receiving mail server won't need to lookup the a or mx
records.

You might want to change ip4:74.86.58.248 to ip4:74.86.58.248/30 which will
allow all ip addresses in the block assigned to URL Software Pvt. Ltd. to
send email, but that will depend on your local policy and network setup etc.

phinixvp.com is our client domain and in outlook there is outgoing and
incoming server is mail.phinixvp.com and mx.cleanmailgateway in our mail
cleaner server so first mail come to mx.cleanmailgateway.com server after it
retrieve to mail.phinixvp.com server.

This won't work. The OP said the IP address is dynamic, meaning it
will change, who knows how large the dynamic range is.

Andrew Culver <aculver@uwo.ca> has rightly pointed out already that
his client should be configuring their mail client to relay through a
mail server with a fixed IP address as that is the only way to
guarantee that the email will not fail due to SPF. It may fail for
other reasons but not SPF.

I checked the whois records for 74.86.58.248, it's part of a /30. I guess
the client is on a dynamic ip, but is reallying via 74.86.58.248 which
needs to be added to the spf record.

Had 74.86.58.248 been part of e.g. a /16 and had it had generic rdns I
would of agreed. I think there is some confusion here about what the
client is doing etc.

Re: How to add spf if ip is dynamic [ In reply to ]
Dear Sir,

As per my told in MX record there is show mx.cleanmailgateway.com server but
it is use for incomming mail filter, on outgoing mail 74.86.58.248 ip use
for mail relay. so if i am add 74.86.58.248 IP in sp record may be remote
server found that the MX server is diferent. so what is the perfect spf
record for my all client domain.

SPF doesn't care about the MX and the incoming mail server. It only
wants to know which outgoing mail servers are authorized to send mail
on behalf of the domain.

You can try adding the IP address 74.86.58.248 but once it changes,
since you said it is dynamic, then the SPF policy will not be correct
anymore. IF it is a fixed address that does not change then you will
be okay.

Again, the only way to guarantee a correct SPF policy is to use fixed
IP addresses.

If you insist on using a mail relay that is on a dynamic IP address
then you are better served by not having an SPF policy.

Re: How to add spf if ip is dynamic [ In reply to ]
Thanks for clear my doudt. but now i have only one problem is that we are
provide domain hosting and our mail server ip is 74.86.58.248(Static IP). we
have many client in differen location and may be they are using dynamic ip
internet connection. in this time our client sent mail from outlook or using
proxy+ server on that time if they sent mail on the mail information it show
that mail generated from their isp(Dynamic IP) IP so in spf verification it
is not match with mail server ip and bounce back due to spf.

below is example.

Re: How to add spf if ip is dynamic [ In reply to ]
For each domain that you host, you need to ask "what hosts send mail for
this domain?" Your record should list the outbound addresses of each of
these hosts.

If you are hosting domains for clients, do not assume that your mail
server is the only server that they send their mail from. Ask them.
Maybe they do not want SPF on their domain.

Once you have decided which domains you want to create an SPF record for
and you have a complete list of hosts that send mail for each domain,
you can create an SPF record.

(There are wizards that can help you, but these are often not perfect.
If you use a wizard, don't assume that what it generates is ready for use.)

Using the domain below (lemeridienahmedabad.com), we can see it already
has an SPF record:

lemeridienahmedabad.com. 14355 IN TXT "v=spf1 a mx -all" ""

This is saying that "a" and "mx" are permitted to send mail as
@lemeridienahmedabad.com. The "a" refers to
lemeridienahmedabad.com itself, which is 74.86.56.202 and "mx" refers to
the MX of the domain which is 74.53.172.242.

If these IPs don't actually send mail, you can remove them. You can also
list the actual IP addresses to reduce DNS lookups, unless there's some
specific reason not to.

Next you want to add the IP that your server sends mail from (74.86.58.248).

This gives you:
v=spf1 ip4:74.86.56.202 ip4:74.53.172.242 ip4:74.86.58.248 -all

Try working through this process for your other domains. Post what you
come up with to this list and we'll tell you if you've got it right. If
we do it all for you, you won't learn. ;)

Okay, let's take a look at what is happening here.

Your client sent an email from: gmoffice@lemeridienahmedabad.com

The SPF policy for lemeridienahmedabad.com states as follows,

lemeridienahmedabad.com. IN TXT "v=spf1 a mx -all" ""

Let's expand all of that:

lemeridienahmedabad.com. IN A 74.86.56.202

lemeridienahmedabad.com. IN MX mx.cleanmailgateway.net.
mx.cleanmailgateway.net. IN A 74.53.172.242

So the SPF policy says that email from the domain
lemeridienahmedabad.com is only authorized from the following IP
addresses:

74.86.56.202
74.53.172.242

The SPF rejection notice says: ( follow this link: http://spf.pobox.com/why.html?sender=gmoffice%40lemeridienahmedabad.com&ip=74.86.58.248&receiver=pgvl.com
)

pgvl.com rejected a message that claimed an envelope sender address of gmoffice@lemeridienahmedabad.com
.
pgvl.com received a message from urlwebserver.com (74.86.58.248) that
claimed an envelope sender address of gmoffice@lemeridienahmedabad.com.

However, the domain lemeridienahmedabad.com has declared using SPF
that it does not send mail through urlwebserver.com (74.86.58.248).
That is why the message was rejected.

Your client relayed an email through urlwebserver.com (74.86.58.248)
which, according to the SPF policy for lemeridienahmedabad.com, is not
authorized.

To solve this problem you either need to add urlwebserver.com
(74.86.58.248) to the SPF policy for lemeridienahmedabad.com or tell
your client to only relay mail through authorized mail servers as set
in the SPF policy.

The only thing that SPF checks is the IP address of the mail server delivering the mail. The end user's IP address is irrelevant unless they are running a mail server that sends mail from *their* computer using *your* domain name. If Outlook is set to use your SMTP server, and your SMTP server does not relay to another mail server, then it is only the IP address of your SMTP server that is important.

If the receiving mail server is looking through the headers of an incoming message and using IP addresses from the headers in its SPF tests, then its SPF implementation is horribly broken and is probably blocking most mail on the planet.
