Need Help Configuring
I run a mail server using a dynamic dns MX record: myserver.com. The server
sends mail through roadrunner: smtp-rochester.rr.com. How do I configure spf
in this circumstance?

Thanks!

You would need to find out the outgoing mail servers that
smtp-rochester.rr.com use. Your mail server's IP is not relevant if it
only forwards mail to smtp-rochester.rr.com. Ideally, RoadRunner would
have an SPF record that you can include in yours, however, if not then
hopefully their tech support can give you a list of IP addresses or a
subnet to use.

the same way as anyone sending email out via smtp-rochester.rr.com.

first ask roadrunner do they have an SPF record for the use {include} of users of this host/cluster
if they do use it

if they don't you need to figure out where mail sent into
smtp-rochester.rr.com.
comes out

as this could be a single host, a multihomed host a cluster or a multi-stage relay

this first email you sent went via
Received: from hrndva-omtalb.mail.rr.com (hrndva-omtalb.mail.rr.com
[71.74.56.125]) by b-lb-mx-sd.listbox.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C51529BE7A

so you need at least 71.74.56.125 in your spf record
now start mailing/looking to build a picture of what other ip's if any are used by this host to send mail out
or just call roadrunner and pray to get someone with a clue what your asking on the phone

So, in effect, I only need to worry about roadrunner's servers.

Great, Thanks!

Alan, my friend, a little decorum could be in order vis-a-vi "your weird
incoming email or crazy MX setups". After all, how is a novice supposed to
know what information is useful and what is not. If I started my college
classes with such a statement, I doubt I would be teaching for very long.

Thanks,

Bob,

I think Alan is coming from months of frustration. He forgets that most
people come to this list as first-time users, without having read any
historical posts (although this would be a good idea - your question has
been answered about a hundred times and the answers are there for you to
see). He assumes you have read the information on http://www.openspf.org/
which states that it is your outgoing configuration that matters (not MX,
which specifies what server(s) are to receive mail bound for your domain,
and not anything else about your inbound configuration). Yet hundreds of
people insist on talking about MX records, receiving servers, inbound
screening and filtering servers, etc. and confusing the issue - obviously
having ignored all of the good info posted out there. He's happy to help,
but wants people to ask intelligent questions and provide relevant data.

RE: Need Help Configuring [ In reply to ]
Bill,

I think your explanation would have been better received. For someone new to
the technology, the data available can be both confusing and intimidating.
As an instructor on a college level teaching English, I need to constantly
remind myself that not everyone has had the basics or remembers them so I
need to be tolerant of seemly unnecessary questions (many the same) being
asked over and over again.

I am still not sure of this technology or even completely sure as to what to
do with the information once I have it. I will spend some time going back
over things before I ask any more irrelevant questions. As to Alan, I would
ask what part of any of my questions was not intelligent? If I already knew
the answers and understood the technology, I wouldn't have asked anything or
presented any information. I challenge you both to go take a beginning
course in English at your local college and not ask a single "stupid"
question.

Thanks,

Bob

Are you paid to teach in college?

Remember that pretty much everyone here is a volunteer, helping newcomers
because we believe in the technology, not because we see any personal
advantage from so doing. It does get frustrating when people come to the
mailing list apparently not having bothered to read the basics of the
technology.

You might think Alan's response was a little sharp. I actually refrained
from replying because mine was about to be somewhat sharper. But flaming
him for it was inappropriate, and I very much hope you drop this thread
immediately. Remember we're volunteers, and no-one wants to put his head
above the parapet when there's shooting going on...

> I am still not sure of this technology or even completely sure as to what
> to do with the information once I have it.

So why don't you go through what you've been told - which had all the
information in it - and have a think about what you're trying to do. Once
you've got a trial solution, ask the group to check it. If you can't
achieve a trial wolution, go as far as you can, and explain why you can't
go any further - thinking through that explanation will usually unblock
the problem anyway.

> As to Alan, I would ask what part of any of my questions was not
> intelligent?

The fact that you gave us a load of detail on your inbound delivery routes
means you hadn't read the bit about SPF describing your outbound routes.
This does rather smack of someone not bothering to read the docs, and just
relying on the kindness of strangers.

> I challenge you both to go take a beginning
> course in English at your local college and not ask a single "stupid"
> question.

But if you enrolled in a course in English Literature, would you honestly
expect to get away with asking something like "Wasn't Shakespeare one of
Germany's greates poets?" ? There's a difference between mere ignorance
and clearly not having done the most basic research...

Vic.

I don't think there was any real flaming going on, but yes, it's time
for this to stop - Maybe Alan was having a busy day, maybe Bob felt
disrespected... everyone shake hands and move on.

Are you paid to teach in college?

Remember that pretty much everyone here is a volunteer, helping
newcomers
because we believe in the technology, not because we see any personal
advantage from so doing.

So why don't you go through what you've been told - which had all the
information in it - and have a think about what you're trying to do.
Once
you've got a trial solution, ask the group to check it. If you can't
achieve a trial wolution, go as far as you can, and explain why you
can't
go any further - thinking through that explanation will usually unblock
the problem anyway.

The fact that you gave us a load of detail on your inbound delivery
routes
means you hadn't read the bit about SPF describing your outbound routes.
This does rather smack of someone not bothering to read the docs, and
just
relying on the kindness of strangers.

> I challenge you both to go take a beginning
> course in English at your local college and not ask a single "stupid"

But if you enrolled in a course in English Literature, would you
honestly
expect to get away with asking something like "Wasn't Shakespeare one of
Germany's greates poets?" ? There's a difference between mere ignorance
and clearly not having done the most basic research...

Obviously you, Alan, and others see yourselves as demigods that we unwashed
and uninformed should bow down to and take abuse from. As ambassadors for
this technology, you are not doing very much to bring new people into the
fold. Being volunteers does not excuse your lack of civility and inability
to deal with your own frustrations. Accusing me of flaming because I reacted
to being treated poorly is a sure sign of misguided self-importance. At any
rate, it appears useless to try to get a skunk to change its stripes, so I
will refrain from making further posts. Please continue to enjoy your little
ego driven hegemony.

See, that's exactly the sort of flounce that means I won't be helping you
in the future.

I tried to explain to you why you got the reaction you did. You've taken
that effort to help as a personal affront. I'd rather not cause affront,
so I won't try to help again. Guess who loses most here...
