Hardfail vs. soft fail
In troubleshooting some e-mail issues, a technician recommended changing
our spf settings to do a "hard-fail" instead of a soft-fail. How would
I do that?

Thanks in advance!

Jim

Fail (aka Hard fail) record ends in -all

I do. In my experience it deters spammers from forging my domain and the
false positive rate from SPF rejection is very low.

While first starting out, ~all is a little more lenient.
Eventually you should change to -all which tells the world other servers
are definitely not allowed.

From http://www.openspf.org/SPF_Record_Syntax

Result Explanation Intended action
(...)
Fail The SPF record has designated the host as NOT being allowed to
send reject

SoftFail The SPF record has designated the host as NOT being
allowed to send but is in transition accept but mark

Thanks Scott. I've requested the change with my ISP.
