still no go
Using the binary that seemed to compile successfully, it is still not logging to the mysql server and I have to do #rsyslogd & to run it in the background.

Let's look at the backgrounding a bit later (that should not be too
hard). Can you use the -d switch (debugging) and once it is started
SIGUSR1 it, so that debugging is enabled again. stdout should then hold
some helpful information.
