FSSTD, explosion-method, et al.
Qmailers:

This is not a technical matter, but with all due respect, the recent
discussions on file placement, licensing, and delivery have begun to take
on the aspect of "religious war."

Might I suggest the following?

1. Wait a couple of hours before replying to anything.

2. Certain matters, e.g., licensing, are going to be resolved by djb, and
by no one else, so extended public argument over the particulars may not
be ultimately as productive as private advocacy.

3. Other matters are going to be resolved by private preference, e.g., by
means of symlinks for file placement. For distribution purposes, it is
indeed important that the issue of file placement be resolved.
Personally, I am on the side of something more in conformance with FSSTND.
At the same time, I think that this will be an issue which vendors who
wish to distribute qmail as an RPM or similar package will want to work
out with djb in the course of licensing.

4. Issues of scalability do not fall, IMO, into the "religious wars"
category. They represent a definite issue in the widespread distribution
of qmail. I run several lists in the 5,000 member range, and run into
these issues on a daily basis, even with a T1. I think that batched
delivery to identical MX hosts makes sense; at the same time,
pre-optimization of distribution lists, e.g., sorting by reverse domain
name, and pre-testing of addresses, can contribute to a smooth delivery
sequence.

I realize that these observations are a mixture of partisanship and
even-handedness, but the degree of rapidity and rancor in recent postings
gives me pause.

Sincerely, Jonathan Cohen

Re: FSSTD, explosion-method, et al. [ In reply to ]
what exactly do you mean when you say you ``run into these issues on a
daily basis''?
