Oddity with virtualdomains and UUCP
I have setup qmail roughly following the Life with qmail guide, bar
that I used NetBSD's pkgsrc port (running on Debian 7.0) instead of
compiling a separate copy.

All appears well when sending local mail, and works nicely.

Issue #1: When receiving mail via UUCP, the From header is modified to
be from the local user, which I find strange.

Issue #2: I'm using the virtualdomains and aliases setup found at
http://cr.yp.to/qmail/faq/outgoing.html#uucp

I have :alias-uucp in my virtualdomains, and the corresponding line in
~alias/.qmail-uucp-default , being changed only for the remote UUCP
host. Attempting to send messages to any other host besides myself, I
invariably get a bounceback saying that there is no local mailbox that
matches.

It looks to me like qmail is completely ignoring the virtualdomains
file, even though it's been HUP'd and completely restarted multiple
times. Aliases in general work, just not virtualdomains.

I've googled for insight, and read through the FAQ and whatnot, and
can find no further enlightenment for either issue. There are no
errors in the logs files. This is really killing me right now, as I
would like to move from postfix to qmail, but I rely on UUCP for
various reasons, and I'm loathe to try to replace something that works
so well.

Any help is much appreciated.

Unless I'm mistaken, that's because :alias-uucp is a ``catchall'' that
will treat all domains as virtualdomains, and thus result in local
deliveries for all domains which are delivered to a program that then
sends the message on to UUCP. Is this what you wanted?

If not, please describe what you're trying to accomplish.

Thanks,

Andy

That's exactly what should happen. The goal, as is stated on the page I
referenced, is for all outgoing email to be sent via UUCP to an upstream
site. This is accomplished via forcing all mail through the alias which
executes uux to queue the mail with UUCP. However, it is never making it
that far.

Have you also added your virtualdomain to the rcpthosts file?

This step is mentioned in section 3.4 of lifewithqmail.

Amitai, thanks for your work on it.

The package itself doesn't appear to be an issue, since local delivery
works fine, and after I added a wildcard domain to rcpthosts, remote
delivery worked, just not with UUCP. After putting :alias-uucp back
into virtualdomains, it just went back to bouncing.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to really to continue
troubleshooting, and I've already ended up going back to postfix on
this box. Hopefully I'll have some more time in the future to give it
another go.

Thanks again for the help, folks.

It's really hard for anyone on this list to point to any particular
issue without more details. Logs from qmai-send would be useful.
Specific configuration details would also be useful (e.g. what's in
virtualdomains, locals, rcpthosts, etc...
