[OpenInfra Foundation] Help choose the mascot for the OpenInfra Summit in Vancouver!
As we prepare for the OpenInfra Summit in Vancouver (the Schedule is LIVE [1]), we wanted to get your feedback on the theme of the event! In previous years, we’ve included elements in the theme that are relevant to the city we’re in. For example, in 2018 in Vancouver we had this adorably large orca whale [2]. In Barcelona in 2016, we sported a graffiti-happy pigeon [3].

Now we need your help deciding what the Vancouver-specific “mascot” will be for the OpenInfra Summit happening June 13-15 (Registration is open [4]). We have narrowed down the options to 3 lovable animals that are common to the region.

1. Hummingbird: The official bird of the city (specifically “Ana’s Hummingbird”), can be spotted all over Vancouver. “With their iridescent emerald feathers and sparkling rose-pink throats, Anna’s Hummingbird are more like flying jewelry than birds, but they are also fierce defenders and enforce their turf with tenacity.”
2. Marmot: The Vancouver Island marmot is one of the largest members of the squirrel family, about the size of a large house cat. They are easy to recognize by their rich chocolate brown fur with contrasting white patches on their nose, chin, forehead and chest. “Vancouver Island marmots live in family groups called colonies and hibernate below ground from mid-September until late April or early May”, meaning they will be out of hibernation by the time the Summit rolls into town.
3. Sea Otter: Members of the weasel family, there are two distinct species of otters that can be seen around Vancouver Island: river otters and sea otters. The Sea Otter weighs up to 36 kilograms with a length that can exceed 1.5 meters, and has the densest fur of any mammal, with over 100,000 hairs per square centimeter. “They are social animals, and are often seen in large groups”, much like those of us in the OpenInfra community.

You can see pictures of each of these worthy creatures in the poll [5]. Please cast your vote by Wednesday, February 22 to help us choose.

We’ll see you at the OpenInfra Summit!

Thanks,
Wes

Re: [OpenInfra Foundation] Help choose the mascot for the OpenInfra Summit in Vancouver! [ In reply to ]
Thank you everyone for your votes! The results are in and the sea otters have it by a solid margin! In second was the hummingbird, followed by the lowly marmot which received 0 votes.

Final results:
Sea Otter: 79%
Hummingbird: 21%
Marmot: 0%

We appreciate everyone’s participation and look forward to seeing you all in Vancouver! If you haven’t already done so, don’t forget to register [1].

Thanks,
Wes
