Facebook was being observed not to be able to refresh web UI newsfeeds here
around 1600EDT, via Sprint LTE. It's now working again.

Android client via the same connection seemed to be working, as were XMPP
connections to FB chat.

DNS issues seem to be the case in Europe as well. I ran a check on most
major DNS servers Including google, cloudflare and digitalocean) and does
not seem to get a valid response.

Seems like a DNS issue. None of their DNS servers respond to direct lookup requests (a.ns.facebook.com, b.ns.facebook.com, etc), their self-registrar with NS records for the domain is down, and you can get an error page to load by visiting the last A record IP for their site (157.240.229.35) in a browser.

It’s always DNS.

Right around the same time I had problems resolving names of a few
sites, including Hacker News and others using Cloudflare's resolving
name servers (1.1.1.1), so I switched to Google's (8.8.8.8) and
everything seemed fine.

Mailing list is seeing a lot of duplicate messages about this outage. Reporting seems to indicate that Facebook’s BGP routes have been withdrawn. I’d suggest further discussion on the issue move to outages-discussion as the outage is well known and widespread.

It's worth noting that all these emails to the list are arriving on my
(independent) mail server late and out of order. Unlikely to be
coincidence.

Somebody on Twitter said that the CEO of Cloudflare said that all of
Facebook's BGP routes "had been withdrawn", but that Tweet wasn't
from any particularly reliable source. Still the problem does seem
go further than just DNS for Facebook properties.

They've deployed a botched update on their border routers (currently their
BGP routes are pulled from the internet). Having the nameservers in their
network... Means the DNS problem is just a symptom of a bigger problem.

From everything I've seen today, it's an issue with BGP. They've misconfigured something, and all of their peers have been pulled.
I've seen reports that say employees weren't even able to get into the building to lay hands on routers because the keycard readers weren't working.

Messages to this list are still late arriving... I haven't seen my own
posts to the list return to me yet. The message that I'm replying to,
sent at 9:15 -0700, is the most recent I've received. What could this
list/outages.org have to do with Facebook being down? What else is
going on?

DNS issues seem to be the case in Europe as well. I ran a check on most major DNS servers Including google, cloudflare and digitalocean) and does not seem to get a valid response.

It's worth noting that all these emails to the list are arriving on my
(independent) mail server late and out of order. Unlikely to be
coincidence.

Somebody on Twitter said that the CEO of Cloudflare said that all of
Facebook's BGP routes "had been withdrawn", but that Tweet wasn't
from any particularly reliable source. Still the problem does seem
go further than just DNS for Facebook properties.

Indicating the country (or the US state) is, most of the times,
unimportant. The access provider is more relevant.

Facebook works for me (provider: Free, AS: 12322).
