Juniper?s KB21476 says they recommend the below Junos versions for the original boxes as of 6/1/2021. Given that you are running 14.2, you?d probably have to do a couple of interim upgrades to get to the list below. I would refer to the release notes just to be sure. Unfortunately this is not a -BP chassis with enhanced midplane connectors, so the switch card upgrade for this chassis is non-existent to the latest, but it?s still a heck of a platform!

Junos 17.3R3-S10
Junos 18.4R2-S5
Junos 19.3R3-S2
Junos 19.4R3-S3

are you sure that this SCB model (the original) is supported past junos 14?
the compatibility matrix seemed to imply SCB-E is the minimum, but that
might be due to an EoL.

See the doc here:

https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/information-products/topic-collections/release-notes/16.2/topic-113674.html

Please note the very important info below:

Support for upgrades and downgrades that span more than three Junos OS releases at a time is not provided, except for releases that are designated as Extended End-of-Life (EEOL) releases. EEOL releases provide direct upgrade and downgrade paths?you can upgrade directly from one EEOL release to the next EEOL release even though EEOL releases generally occur in increments beyond three releases.
You can upgrade or downgrade to the EEOL release that occurs directly before or after the currently installed EEOL release, or to two EEOL releases before or after. For example, Junos OS Releases 14.1, 14.2, 15.1 and 16.1 are EEOL releases. You can upgrade from Junos OS Release 14.1 to Release 15.1 or even from Junos OS Release 14.1 to Release 16.1. However, you cannot upgrade directly from a non-EEOL release that is more than three releases ahead or behind.
To upgrade or downgrade from a non-EEOL release to a release more than three releases before or after, first upgrade to the next EEOL release and then upgrade or downgrade from that EEOL release to your target release.
For more information about EEOL releases and to review a list of EEOL releases, see https://www.juniper.net/support/eol/junos.html.

Sounds like you?ll need to go to 15.1, then 16.1, then 16.2.

Limited/Unlimited depends on your geographic region and if your encryption access is limited.

As for 64/32 bit, check what it’s running now and go from there:

‘show version | match kernel’

yeah it's 32 bit

RE-S-2000-4096 is a 2ghz pentium m and afaik doesn't do 64bit.

https://support.juniper.net/support/eol/software/junos/
Although the last supported Release is 16.2, you might want to run
16.1$latest. It feels like 16.2 was intended to be supported longer, but

"16.1R7: EOE extended to 28-Jul-2020 and EOS extended to 28-Jan-2021."

So the "newest" Release is most likely 16.1 as the End of Engineering
was later and therefore more fixes/changes went into that than into 16.2.

End of Services was extended for 16.2 as well:
"16.2: EOS extended to 01-May-2021 for T4000, TX-3D, MX240/480/960,
PTX3000 and PTX5000."
But end of engineering was not.

And as we are past both end of services now, it might make more sense to
stick with the release that got more engineering.

Most of our customers still holding onto RE2000 are on 16.1
Some managed to upgrade successfully even beyond that, but its not
supported and might create interesting problems. Similar to when RE1300
was not intended to go past 14.2 but would still run on 15.X an newer
often :)

regards
Tobias

In my experience 17.3R3-Sx also works with RE-2000, original SCB-MX,
and MPC line cards, although I don't know about support for DPC cards.

I was about to try 19.4R3 on basically the same hardware, seems to work well on my MX80s and ACX2200s.

made it from 14.2 to 15.1 so far. a silly question. to where are folk
uploading the to-be-installed images? my old fingers want /var/tmp, but
it gets blown away.

Just in case, did you try a request system storage cleanup, before trying the recovery snapshot ?

I suppose you had a look at
https://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB33892
but it doesn't seem to match your problem, actually.

What about a
show chassis hardware detail | match " MB"
that would show the size of the second disk? Just to check whether there's a chance to have the snapshot done on it or not :)
