Can someone direct me to any documentation explaning
the difference between Type 1 and type 2
route-distignuisher? Is this a standard thing?

What is the usage of this value (type1 and type2)?

The difference is the semantics of the Administrator subfield of the RD. See
section 4.2 of
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ppvpn-rfc2547bis-02.txt

To summarize the Administrator subfields:
Type 0: 2-byte ASN
Type 1: 4-byte IP address
Type 2: 4-byte ASN
