BIDI SFP support on Summit48si platform
Hi,

I have an Extreme Networks Summit48si with EW 7.7.2.4("Full L3 +
Security" license). This switch has two SFP slots. If I insert various
BIDI type SFP transceivers to this switch, I always get the
"<Warn:PORT> Unsupported GBIC from vendor OEM", "<Warn:PORT>
Unsupported GBIC from vendor OPT" or "<Erro:PORT> ERROR: Port 50 :
unknown GBIC. Port will not activate. Replace with Extreme Networks
GBIC."

Does Summit48si platform support BIDI SFP transceivers? If yes, is one
restricted to use Extreme Networks BIDI SFP transceivers?

thanks,
Martin

I'am not sure, but try some recent 7.8 EWare. It should work, but will
report unsupported.
The problem is in last Error - unknown GBIC is reported when GBIC is
programmed i.e. with some Cisco EEPROM content,
without setting bit that sais - I'am 1G Ethernet module.
You should reprogram your modules, or send them to me ;)

Marcin

Hi,

so you have seen BIDI(Extreme Networks seems to call those 1000BASE
BX-D/1000BASE BX-U SFP's or 1000BASE-BX in general in their
documentation) type SFP transceivers in Summit48si platform? According
to "Extreme Networks Pluggable Interface Modules Installation Guide"
1000BASE-BX Bi-Directional SFP Modules are not supported on Summit48si
platform, but probably the Summit48si platform was already end of life
at the time this document was published :)

thanks,
Martin

Well, but inside of 100BASE-BX there is space to mark it as BIDI. The
only reasonable choice is LX.
If BIDI modules will be configured (in EEPROM) as LX modules - they will
work fine.

I guess they are made for Cisco without any standard information about
beeing LX in EEPROM,
so the switch doesn't know how to treat the module.
Same happens if you put STM-4 module in a switch, it is marked then as
STM-4 and no ethernet.
The only multi configuration is possible for multi-rate modules (with
i.e. max speed 2.6G).
These are set to be 100Base-LX, 1000BaseLX, STM-1, STM-4, STM-16,
Etherchannel (whatever except 4G) etc...
