macOS Mythfrontend builds Poll
Currently I build MythFrontend for High Sierra, Catalina, and Big Sur. As
I'll soon be upgrading my development machines to Monterey, I'll be
building for that macOS version plus up two others (I unfortunately do not
have the time or resources to support building on more than 3 OSes).

I'd like to poll this group on what other 2 version I should build for:

Options:

- High Sierra 10.13
- Mojave 10.14
- Catalina 10.15
- Big Sur 11

My current thoughts were to build for

- High Sierra 10.13 (oldest I can support and works on mojave)
- Catalina 10.15 (works on Big Sur but poor graphics)
- Monterey (not optional ???? )

Any preferences from the users on this mailing list?

John my desktop machine is a mid 2011 iMac 27. It can't ever go past High Sierra.
My laptop is catelina. I have hesitated to upgrade it as I have and use Parallels (and you have to buy again if you upgrade. (every time? certainly for Big Sur and then for Monterey)
Much as it tortures my sole to say it, Parallels is much snappier than VBox on mac, and somewhat snappier than VBox on linux.

Using your build setup I can and have built for both machines. Having your pre-built frontends is convenient, but is not really a biggie.
I'm a very untypical mac user so upgrading to have my (sic) iPhone and my laptop waltz on the iPad is not what I need to do.
BTW High Sierra and catelina front ends do not retrieve meta data. I use the FE on my linux BE to scan and retrieve which works 99% of the time.

James

I would be very happy if you continue to build for High Sierra as I have an old iMac that I cannot upgrade past that, otherwise, my MacBook Pro is now running Monterey.

If I was to favour anything else, it would probably be Big Sur as it is the last version that some older Macs can run without hacking.

Thanks for your great work, your MythFrontends are greatly appreciated by those of use that don't have the time or the knowledge to build on the Mac for. themselves.

Regards,

Dave.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but my newest macbook pro has not
been updated by Apple in years to the point of not really being useful for
any software use.

I installed Linux Mint 20 and now it runs the latest and greatest of any
software I want except MacGourmet. I keep an old iMac around for only that
program.

Since the MB Pro is a Core i5 second gen it works great with Mythfrontend
v31.

I have an iMac M1 24” running Monterey and have no problems running the same version of MythFE v31.0-100-gea0831c74a on it as I do on my Mac mini(2019) with Core i5 six core running Big Sur. Rosetta 2 is a wonderful thing on my M1 iMac!
I do run it in a 1280x720 window on both machines so there is no stress on either one when running.

Side note: the only thing I have had to give up on the new M1 iMac is virtual box. Most Everything else I use has an M1 port, or works perfectly with Rosetta 2.

I do have a 2007 iMac as well as a 2010 Mac mini, but they have been converted to linux, and running the latest versions of ubuntu on them as they are both 64 bit processors.

Big Sur and Monterey are my current choices
I won’t be worrying about current Mythfe I am running until such time as I need to upgrade to future v32.

Regards.

Those three targets make sense to me.

It’s not so much that you have to buy it again each time, but if you have an older version than is needed for your OS and you don’t qualify for a free upgrade, then you will have to pay to upgrade.

It can be tricky, but sometimes it can pay to buy an upgrade when it comes out (and it’s heavily discounted) if you anticipate upgrading to a new version of the OS in the near future. Other times it can be cheaper to ignore all the upgrades, and just pay full price when you do eventually upgrade your OS. ISTR that Parallels is one of those where a couple of upgrades (if you get them during the promotions) can work out cheaper than a full price upgrade later one - but again, it varies. And some vendors also restrict upgrades such that you can’t upgrade from “too old” a version.

I know I’ve paid for upgrades for a number of packages where I can’t run the newer version yet just to avoid the “pay full price later” issue.

Simon
