"Watch Videos" Mark as watched
In "Watch Videos" if you highlight a file and do "Info" you have a
option to "Mark as watched" or "Mark as unwatched".

However, this information is only visible in that screen. Is there a
way to have it show in some way when just looking at the list of video
files? I suppose there is not a way to have it show a eye symbol like
it does with recorded programs but some way of telling a file had been
marked as watched would be really handy.

You can filter the display to only show unwatched or watched

I had never noticed that setting before so that is progress, thanks.

What would be ideal would be having a file marked as "watched", show as
a different color. A long time ago someone helped me change the
selection cursor to show as a different color by changing this in:
/home/mythtv/.mythtv/themes/Mythbuntu/base.xml
<!-- to give a green highlight -->
<state name="selectedactive" from="active">
<shape name="buttonbackground">
<type>roundbox</type>
<fill color="#00ff00" alpha="100" /> <!-- changed this entry -->
<cornerradius>22</cornerradius>
</shape>

But I don't know if that is possible.

I looked at the code from the Steppes theme along with the information
given in thread about "Videos - how to use it properly with large
collection".

I tried many changes to both base.xml and video-ui.xml but can't make
it work. Maybe the Mythbuntu theme is not able to do this. But it is
good to know other themes do.
At the next MythTv upgrade I may try a different theme.

Thanks to everyone.

Here's a patch that will show the watched icon in the MythCenter-wide
theme, assuming you use the List view.

Why wait till a mythtv upgrade? You can switch themes at any time.
Only if you make changes to them, store a backup elsewhere. Just
in case your changes get overwritten by an update.

You have to change the theme in the right place on disk. In Ubuntu,
the themes are stored in /usr/share/mythtv/themes, and any changes you
do there will be overwritten by package updates or downloaded theme
updates. So what you need to do is make a copy of the theme you want
to change under $HOME/.mythtv/themes. Change the name of the theme to
something that does not match any existing theme name. I use
MythCenter-wide, so my modified theme goes in
/home/stephen/.mythtv/themes/MythCenter-wide-JSW. Once you have
created your modified theme, just go to Setup > Theme Chooser and
select it. After that, you will need to run a diff on your copy of
the theme against the version it was made from in
/usr/share/mythtv/themes whenever there are changes to the original
theme, and you will need to propagate the changes to your modified
version. To get mythfrontend to load any new changes you make to your
theme, you need to re-select it in the Theme Chooser. You should see
mythfrontend disappear from the screen while it reloads, then
re-appear a second or two later.

I was modifying the code in ~/.mythtv/themes/Mythbuntu
and I did verify it was the right place because I could change the
color I have for the selection cursor and the change was seen when I
exited and restarted the frontend.

I suspect the Mythbuntu theme can't do what I want (could be wrong of
course).

If you can do something in one theme then you can do it on all themes
it's just a matter of making the right changes.

It looks like you just need to add the watchestedstate in the correct spot.

I'd start by copy pasting the one from the Steppes theme and work from
there (the one gotcha I can see is you will have to make sure the
filename of the watched.png points to a icon available to the MythBuntu
theme - you may have to add one?).

I went back and tried adding the "watchedstate" information to many
different locations in the video-ui.xml file but no luck.
(I did verify the path to the watched.png file was valid)

I do not doubt you about the theme being able to do it, but I'm afraid
it requires much more detailed knowledge about how the various xml
commands work and interact with each other than I have.

Thanks for trying.

Switching to Steppes is very easy and if you don't like it you can
switch back again. Sometimes I switch back and forth several times a
day. Just go into setup -> theme chooser and choose steppes. To switch
back, do the same.

I know many people make changes to their MythTV but it is used
a lot in my house and I have always followed the rule once it's working
no changes can be made to the existing system. I only change things
when I build a new version (on a different box). I will for sure look at
that theme at the next build.

Admittedly I did make changes to the xml file but I made a copy of it
before starting so I was 100% sure I could revert back.

What version of MythTV are you using?

Are you using the Mythbuntu or Mythbuntu-classic theme?

For what it's worth I just tried adding the "watchedstate" and it worked
fine for me on master and using the Mythbuntu theme.

It's just Mythbuntu

~/.mythtv/themes/Mythbuntu

I would be very interested in seeing where you added the code in the
xml.
