Recorded wrong channel
I prepared to enjoy last night's episode of Last Week Tonight showing up in
my watch recordings list. Info shows it was recorded from HBO via my
HDPVR.

When I play it, the recording is of Masterpiece on PBS, which could be
either from the HDPVR or a HDHomerun.

How could this happen?

My first thought is a channel change error. What are you using to change
channels? What STB/service are you using?

Another thought is that the STB the HDPVR is connected to received a
firmware upgrade and needs some manual intervention to dismiss some menus.
This happens to me almost every STB firmware upgrade on verizon.

The HD-PVR is a device that will record component video from some
external source. It will record the video that is output from some
other TV-providing source, like a cable box.

If you have questions about what device the recording came from, you can
run ffprobe on the .ts file for the recording. If it's from the HD-PVR,
it'll show up as H264 video. e.g.:
Stream #0:0[0x1011]: Video: h264 (Main) (HDMV / 0x564D4448), yuv420p(tv,
bt709, top first), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 29.97 fps, 59.94 tbr,
90k tbn, 59.94 tbc

If it's from a HDHomerun, in most cases it'll be an MPEG2 file. e.g.:
Stream #0:0[0x641]: Video: mpeg2video (Main) ([2][0][0][0] / 0x0002),
yuv420p(tv, bt709, top first), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed
Captions, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc

Now, let's say that you've confirmed that it did indeed come from your
HD-PVR. Your goal now would be to figure out why your channel changer
didn't work.

Depending on what you're recording from, you may have one of a number of
mechanisms set up to perform the channel changing. My cable box is
controlled via firewire. My older one was a DB-9 serial port. Some
folks may go the IR-blaster route. Either controlled by a serial port
from their computer, or perhaps a blaster connected to the HD-PVR if you
got that working.

There are a lot of moving parts here. And depending on what mechanism
you're using, there are a number of ways that your channel may have
failed to change. But given the amount of information provided above,
it'll be on you to figure out what may have went wrong.

I had this happen enough times that I turned my channel-changer into a
wrapper a long time ago:

# The menu button will turn on the STB if it's off
/usr/local/bin/6200ch.bin -g <GUID> -m

# If it wasn't off, press escape thrice
sleep 0.5
/usr/local/bin/6200ch.bin -g <GUID> -e
sleep 0.5
/usr/local/bin/6200ch.bin -g <GUID> -e
sleep 0.5
/usr/local/bin/6200ch.bin -g <GUID> -e

sleep 0.5
# Actually change the channel
touch /tmp/6200ch_was_here
/usr/local/bin/6200ch.bin -g <GUID> -4 $1

The downside is that channel changing via the HD-PVR source with this
change is slow enough to be unpleasant. On the other hand, I don't
really even think about watching live TV much, and I'm pretty sure that
I have fewer surprises in my recordings since making that change.
