Help, I've screwed up mythfrontend and Leanfront on my FireTV
Yesterday my FireTV worked great on mythfrontend and leanfront. Today,
big issues.

Here's what has changed. We were mainly using mythtv for watching
recording late so we could skip commercials. There are no new network
shows, so we've seen everything recorded on mythtv over the past months
and deleted them. So nothing on the system. Anything we wanted to keep
got transcoded to m4v files and moved to a NAS that the mythtv Video
Storage Group lists , so we can watch the videos.

So this was a good time to rebuild the backend from scratch. No saved
database; brand new installation. That went well and because the backend
name and IP is the same, things like Kodi and Leanfront can find them
just fine. I got all the PC based frontends up and running; no issues.
Kodi and Mythtv-frontend work perfectly for live TV, recordings and Videos.

Next I got mythfrontend v31.0-79 working on the Shield TV and see no
issues once the database setting were fixed. But on Leanfront v0-172 I
can watch recording and videos, but LiveTV regardless of channel plays
one of my Video file from my NAS, same video no matter which channel.

Now I went to the FireTV 4K and mythfrontend is a mess. Most times when
you click on a Program in the Guide it will switch to the channel, but
no video, brief audio then nothing until you get the error: "Video Frame
Buffering Failed Too Many Times". You also can't play a recording.
Occasionally you will get some live TV but rarely. Both my old backend
and new one are v31.

On the FireTV 4K and Shield TV Leanfront play videos and recordings
fine, but LiveTV plays a NAS video, just like the Shield TV.  If I was
watching Live TV on a PC with mythfrontend, Leanfront will see that in
the Live TV list and I can play that, but not if I go to the Channel
folder and select a channel by channel number.

This makes no sense to me because it worked yesterday on the old v31
backend and the new backend is V31 with a cleaner database. All my
Storage Groups point to the exact directories I used before because the
RAID disks were not touched except to fix the owner and permissions
since Ubuntu changed what user mythtv's number was.

Any ideas what to do I've tired deleting all the data on the FireTV 4K
for both mythfrontend and leanfront, but that changed nothing.

Playing the same video file all the time is characteristic of a demo
tuner having been set up and pointed to that video file.

I'm guessing that's a backend setup thing you can do. I'm not aware of
it. It's also a problem I have on my traditional PC based frontends.
When I use mythfrontend on a PC or on my Shield TV they behave exactly
as they did before. I'm going to test a few tuner specific settings and
do more testing today.

There's nothing to lose if I have to blow it all up and start again.
Part of my rebuild was to use a SSD for my boot drive. I forgot how
really fast those things are compared to Hard drives.

You should know if you have set up a demo tuner. But maybe you
slipped and clicked on the wrong thing. If you run mythtv-setup and
go to "2. Capture cards", you should see a tuner listed with "DEMO :"
at the front, followed by the name of the file it is pointed to. If
you have one or more of them, delete them.

A demo tuner is used to set up backends where there are no real tuners
available. When you record from it, or play live TV from it, it will
always play the same video file it is pointed to. I think it will
repeat from the beginning of the file whenever it reaches the end.
Demo tuners are very useful when you want to have a backend in a
virtual machine so that you can try something with it. They also
allow you to make a slave backend without any real tuners so that
slave backend can provide storage group directories to the MythTV
system.

Hi Jim

Please make sure you are using the latest leanfront version.

There is a bug in leanfront, which I thought I had fixed. It could be
confusing a RecordedID with a Video ID. If it has a video with the same
ID it may play that instead of the live tv recording. Each video and
each recording has an id number on the mythtv database, and the numbers
could overlap.

I will get a fix done.

Peter

I can't imagine that there was a program name with the same title as the
recording that is playing.

I'm sure you'll find a logic problem that can be fixed. My bigger concern
now is the mythfrontend v0-79 32 bit on the FireTV 4K. It was working
perfectly until I rebuilt the backend. I even uninstalled it and
reinstalled it but no change. But still got the "Video Frame
Buffering Failed Too Many Times" error. I don't remember any backend
settings that are needed to support mythfrontend on Android different from
a PC mythfrontend or even on Shield TV 64 bit

I would check if the Live TV program was recorded.

Also you may need to increase the timeout settings on the tuner
(mythtv-setup on the backend, Capture Cards, select your card, tuning
timeout). I have mine set at 8000.

On the FireTV 4K the failure is Live TV or Recorded TV for
mythtv-frontend.  I'm make the tuning timeout change.

I'll test the new v0-173 ASAP.

1.  So v0-173 Leanfront fixed the LiveTV problem on the Shield TV and
FireTV 4K; Thanks.

2.  I increased all tuning timeouts to 8000, but no change.  On
mythfrontend on the FireTV 4K, I have found that it must be a
mythtv-frontend video profile setting.  For some reason those settings
get changed with a fresh backend. Once I set them and exit they change
on the next running of the app. If I get them right and assign a unique
identifier they still doesn't stick until as least the 2nd time after
it's setup and exited, launched, and then setup again.

So what I noticed is regardless of LiveTV or Recorded TV, the 1080i
programs fail and the 720p ones play correctly. Now I just have to find
the setting I use to use on the FireTV. I think I posted those on the
Mythtv forum so I'll check there.

I found the correct settings for FireTV 4K at
https://forum.mythtv.org/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=3857

and that fixed the issue. I thought the frontend would remember it's
previous settings, but the new backend reset them somehow.

Anyway, it fixed now.

For mythfrontend most settings are stored in the backend database. If it
is a new database they will be lost. Also for mythfrontend on android
the frontend name defaults to android-xxxxxxxx where xxxxxx is some
random number. If you reinstall on android, that number may change.
Settings are stored based on frontend name. It is best to go into
frontend setup and enter a frontend name that you choose, so that it
finds the same settings as before.

So when I look in any frontend, I see Settings -> General -> Database
Configuration -> unique identifier.  It seems that if I set that
identifier, the database records my frontend settings in the database
under that name. When I look at localhost:6544 I see Frontend Status
that shows all my frontends that have the unique identifier set.

Is that what you are talking about??
