HDHomerun Premium TV Service
Silicondust is introducing a premium fee service that will deliver some
channels over the internet but accessed through the HDHomerun hardware.
Demo channels are now available for the Duo and Quattro after the latest
firmware update.

The video below mentions that Plex and Kodi will be able to access it. Just
curious if anyone knows if mythtv can as well. I know some of the
Silicondust dust techs monitor this list so hopefully one of them will
swoop in and give us the lowdown.

I suspect MythTV can't currently access those channels. The reason is
the new channels are probably tuned by virtual channel numbers.
MythTV only does that on HDHR Primes. In addition, MythTV isn't set
up to use different tuning techniques on a channel by channel basis on
a single device.

The tuning and streaming method for these channels is the same as a
CableCARD based HDHomeRun, so at that level it should be close.

Other work will be involved as David points out.

We will try to get the lineups added to Gracenote to solve the guide
side of things.

Nick - Silicondust.

Hi Nick, do you have any info on the copy protection on these channels?
That is, will they be recordable by mythtv?

Yes, adding the lineups in Gracenote would be a tremendous help.
Those would be combined locat OTA and SD Premium Channels lineups,
right? If so, we could treat those HDHRs much like we do Primes with
cablecards and do all tuning via virtual channel numbers.

Will Premium Channels work on Primes without cablecards installed? If
so, I could possibly work on the changes. I have an extra Prime and
use it without a cablecard to record clear QAM channels.

Will they need to be added to Schedules Direct as well?

Schedules Direct gets it data from Gracenote. When Gracenote gets the
lineups, Schedules Direct will automatically get them too.

I experimented a bit with the hd config program as well as the urls embedded in the web page for the tuner, and was able to get an unencrypted stream from the tuner using the following in VLC:

http://192.168.1.38:5004/auto/v1111 <http://192.168.1.38:5004/auto/v1111>

There should definitely be something possible here for mythtv!

i'm pretty sure this will work for myth as it takes the virtual number
and http call for the hdhr.
https://github.com/garybuhrmaster/mythhdhrrecorder
works good for me on ota lineup calling virtuals like 2.1 11.1 4.3 etc.

i tested this a couple of ways with quattro tuner.

i am pretty sure the mythhdhrrecorder from gary will ultimately work.
but it did not work for me. i believe it is because when you update
firmware and the new 'demos' appear in channel list, you cannot make
them favorites (the yellow star). i think gary's recorder only uses the
favorties as valid channels.

i also have a source for 'freebox' or m3u list. and i added the local
url to that and it is working. i am testing a record now to see what
the bitrates are etc. but the streams are only 30fps / progressive
which is not something i would likely subscribe to. if they were to
offer 60fps 720p and a reasonably priced lineup i would be very
interested.

so i guess for now if you have one of the boxes that is getting these
channels, follow the instructions in wiki to add a m3u playlist source
and just put in your local url's to the hdhr., and set up listings and
it should work.

The lack of definition is concerning and I was going to ask about it.
Thanks for the information!
Alas, another deal breaker is, we watch a lot of BBC America
programming. That is absent from their advertised lineup.

Nice workaround! Can you please add what you've done to the wiki so
others can be directed to it until we get proper support added?

Also, be aware that SD limits the number of premium streams to 4. If
you have more tuners than that, you'll need to use a different
videosource (without the premium channels) for some of them. That's
to prevent MythTV from trying to oversubscribe them.

Looks possible in a couple of ways. In a quick and dirty
test I managed to get it sort of working (at least for a
short recording, since the demos are limited to 2 minute).

I do not have a subscription to the service, and I don't plan
to pay for one, so I tested with the demo content, and while
it required even more gyrations than one might normally
expect for a new source to get it to sort of work (using
the contributed external recorder that supports the modern
HDHR HTTP virtual channel tuning and locking methods,
with a minor change to allow it to see the demo channels
(which would not be necessary with an actual subscription),
and creating a carefully crafted guide, and channel setup,
etc.).

As it was just a proof of concept, all the gyrations do not
really matter, as the point was to show it should be
possible to provide at least some integration should it
be desired.

As pointed out by David and Nick, there are clearly
some rough parts that really need to be addressed,
and would make installation closer to plug and play
(especially if the Gracenote updates get propogated
to Schedules Direct), but for someone motivated to
get it all to work, it seems like it will be possible, with
all the usual caveats.

FWIW, the demo channels (limited to two minutes) do not have
copy protection applied (tested via vlc access to the base urls).
Says little to nothing about what one gets when one subscribes
to the real thing, but looks promising.

Somewhere else I read that only the (recent) gen OTA tuners
have the needed support (and due to the channel numbering
(i.e. cable numbering), I suspect that is a restriction likely to
stay for at least now since overlapping channels on the same
device only leads to badness). If you have a recent gen OTA
tuner it should not need to have an actual antenna attached, just
the most recent firmware to provide the gateway functionality.

FWIW, at least one other OTT providers took a bit of time
to negotiate BBC America, so perhaps it is coming (or
perhaps).

Personally, I would like to see ESPN dropped and the
cost go down by the (estimated by some) $5-8/mo
that they bill for it, but it was probably a requirement
to get Disney (which I would also be personally happy
to not get/pay for, but I understand the perceived need).

But the reality is there is no perfect OTT provider
with just the channels I want, and pure ala carte
has been calculated (by real economists, not couch
potatoe pundits who like to make things up) to cost
some people a lot more than what they pay now,
even if some would pay less.

As alluded to in a previous message, it is not that they cannot
be favorites (all that is required is that they not be marked disabled),
but the demo channels have to be explicitly requested to be
returned via the lineup request, until one subscribes to the service.

I believe that (not returning them by default) was absolutely the
correct choice by SiliconDust to not cause problems with other
existing apps and cause their customers confusion about these
2m demo channels.

It should be auto-magical, but there have been cases in the
past where SD (the Schedules Direct SD) needed to make
some adjustments to provide access to the lineups. I do not
know if those past anomalies have been squashed or not.
Once SD (the SiliconDust SD) gets the data into Gracenote,
if it does not show up as a provider to add to your account
that would be the time to poke SD (yes, the Schedules
Direct SD) to get it working. As they say, the ball is currently
in SD's (the SiliconDust SD) court.

Which is laughable. The US, the penultimate the third nation, has a free
market, which is monopoly bound.
Or something.
Regardless, if it doesn't contain BBC America, I'll not subscribe at
all, be it local cable or network centric.
I'll do something far less lawful, if I must.

I expect it to not be supported, but it doesn't hurt to ask. FWIW, my
Prime without cablecard reports a mishmash of ATSC and cable channel
numbers - 4.1, 5.1, 8.1 and 4, 5, 8. There's also some random ones
which I belive are temporary on-demand streams.
