Lubuntu 16.04 - Latest NVidia update causes frontend to crash
Hello all,

This just happened today. Software updater downloaded and installed new
Nvidia drivers (version 304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2) and after rebooting,
mythtv frontend crashes when it attempts to launch.

The logs are not reporting an error, but here's where they leave off:

I am not sure how to debug this, but what I would like to do is look at the
specific options I have set for whether it's using OpenGL or what exactly
it has set for it's settings, but since the frontend doesn't load, I don't
know how to examine my settings.

Any suggestions?

Is there a command line option I can give to the frontend to increase
logging relative to it's graphic mode settings?

Thanks in advance,

Also, if the answer ends up being to "undo" the latest update... I am not
sure how to do that, so any hints towards that would be much appreciated!

I just had it happen to me too. I use VDPAU on an Nvidia 220 card
with Mythbuntu 16.04. I allowed the crash reporter to file a bug
report about it:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+bug/1639215

I have now reverted to the previous Nvidia version, which is
nvidia-304.131 in my case, and mythfrontend is starting up properly
again.

If you want to try that, you can do it from the command line with
apt-get (search for web pages explaining how), or more easily, use the
Synaptic package manager. Install Synaptic if necessary: apt-get
install synaptic. Then in Synaptic, do a Quick Search for nvidia,
find the package for your Nvidia drivers in the list and click on it,
then click on Package > Force version and select the previous version.
Then Apply. Once the older version has been installed, go to Package
> Lock version to prevent any later versions from being reinstalled by
automatic updates. Then reboot to activate the new (old) Nvidia
version.

See here for more on forcing a package version:

http://www.howtogeek.com/117929/how-to-downgrade-packages-on-ubuntu/

So it looks like the Nvidia-340.132 drivers have a bug, or are doing
something new that is exposing a mythfrontend problem.

Hey all,

Yes, I was able to revert to the Nvidia driver 304.131. It was an update
listed under the "security" fixes, so it's already asked me to update it
again. Your previous post showed me how to "lock" the version, and I have
done that now so I don't have to worry about it being automatically updated
again. (Thanks!)

This may be due to my very old Nvidia Quadro NVS 285 card. I have been
surprised that it has been supported this long.

But if it's either a bug in the new driver, or it's exposing a bug in
mythfrontend ( as opposed to say, a new "feature" in the driver that only
causes this problem on very old Nvidia cards), then I am sure other MythTV
users will be running into this in short order.

I know there are command line options that I can use with mythfrontend that
increase the logging of certain features... is there one for "rendering"
that I can use that may help us pinpoint what's going wrong?

Thanks,

I just ran apt dist-upgrade and my nvidia driver was updated from 340.96
to 340.98. (REALLY 340 and not 304). I can run mythtv and play
recordings, so this version seems fine.

FWIW, I also have an old nvidia card, that ran happily in fedora 23
until a few weeks ago, when the update to 304.132 gave me a black screen
with only tty2 giving system access. I wasn't able to revert to 304.131
- the kernel module wouldn't build - but eventually nouveau worked and
I'm still with that. Currently I see no nvidia drivers in the f23
rpmfusion-nonfree repos.

304 is one of the legacy versions!

For the legacy drivers nvidia tends to introduce as few
changes as possible. But bugs happen. And while
there have been some other reports regarding the
new driver having issues with glx applications, in
all cases of crashes it is often better to directly report
the issues with new drivers on the nvidia support forums
so that the nvidia engineers are aware that the changes
broke at least one application as soon as possible.

You could try

mythfrontend -v gui

It looks like the problem may be opengl related. You could try starting
up with the qt painter instead, by using

mythfrontend -O ThemePainter=qt

If this works and your frontend is OK, change it permanently in the
frontend setup, appearance, theme painter. Make sure also that you are
not using an Opengl video profile.

Well, yes, but it is probably better to confirm with other users that it /is/ an actual bug rather
than operator error before embarrassing yourself on the support forums :)

I was getting error with playback. I don't use GLX to paint the screen, so
was able to load the front end but not play anything. On looking, I was
running the nvidia-404 legacy drivers.I did the following:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia"*"
sudo apt-get install nvidia-367

And now everything's working again.

This only works if your card is not legacy and you by accident are
using the legacy driver. For instance because you upgraded the
hardware without upgrading the driver!!

You can check here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html
which driver supports your card.

It does seem to be a bug in the nvidia-304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2
driver. Whether it is a bug in the Nvidia 304.132 driver, or the
Ubuntu 0ubuntu0.16.04.2 patch, is another matter. I have now tested
on my test PC, which was running Nvidia-340.96 drivers and is a Ubuntu
box, rather than Mythbuntu. When I updated to
Nvidia-340.98-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, mythfrontend still worked fine. Then
I tried changing to nvidia-304, which installed the
nvidia-304.132-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 driver, and found that I was unable to
login to the desktop as it kept crashing and going back to the login
prompt again. So I was unable to try mythfrontend with that driver,
but I expect it would also have crashed. I downgraded the driver to
nvidia-304.131 and then both the desktop login and mythfrontend were
fine.

So what I am intending to do is to change to Nvidia-340 on my main
MythTV box (Mythbuntu 16.04). Since I have an Nvidia 220 card on that
box, like the test PC it should be fine with the 340 drivers. My
mother's MythTV box uses an on-motherboard Nvidia 8200 chip, but that
also seems to be supported by the Nvidia-340 drivers, so I will try
changing it to use them too. I expect that the only reason these
boxes were still using the 304 drivers was that they have been
successively upgraded for many years and the upgrade process has not
had any code to check if the Nvidia drivers should have been upgraded
as well. The 340 version is officially a legacy version, as is 304,
but 340 seems to have Ubuntu support (the GUI install page lists it as
"tested", where the 304 version does not). So I think that anyone who
us using 304 should upgrade to 340 if they can.

George: I checked the
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-340/html/supportedchips.html file installed by
the nvidia-340 package, and the Quadro NVS 285 is listed there but
only in the section where it says what is supported by the 304 driver.
So it looks like moving to the 340 driver is not possible for you.

That was true: I had typed 'nvidia' into the yumex-dnf search window.
But '*nvidia*' finds plenty. :-)
