new OSD plugin code
I like the new OSD functionality. Too bad I don't own a modem or I'd
have it doing CID.

I do however run a script on my server/firewall that watches for weather
warnings since I live in a tornado zone. When there's a warning for my
county or those around me, it was already paging my cellphone. It was a
simple thing to modify this to also broadcast the message to my MythTV
and display it in the Alert box.

Just an idea for those of you who are trying to come up with things to
do with that...

I also played around and made a PHP script that takes form input and
outputs it to the alert box... but I'm not saying what the URL is ;-)
Look, ma, TV Spam! LOL

Of course there's always the ability to receive e-mail notifications,
but with so much spam today that's pretty useless if you ask me.

I imagine it would be easy to set a procmail script that triggered it
when certain people e-mailed you.

What about a MS Exchange plugin (or KOffice or PHPGroupware, etc.) that
sends appointment reminders...?

Notification that a manual transcode just finished?

What other _useful_ ideas have people come up with?

-Tony Maro

Some great ideas were posted earlier this month.

I didn't get a chance to include my own: MythRecipe

It would be kinda cool to be able to browse Myth-friendly recipes from the
kitchen TV.

That'd be cool, but I was referring to the popup alerts you can now have
while watching TV.

Brainstorming here (some have already been noted)...

1. Inclimate weather alerts
2. Killer tech toy back in stock (check a web page for certain keywords)
3. Web site is down
4. Breaking news
5. Caller ID with name
6. New voice mail
7. Integrate with x10 motion sensor to detect someone coming up the
walkway/driveway
8. Appointment reminder
9. New fax
10. Snail mail is here (via wireless sensor)
11. New post to newsgroup matching certain keyword
12. Snort detected attack/file integrity change.
13. Lights left on longer than x minutes in certain room (x10 macro- keep
those kids in shape)
14. Dryer is finished (don't know how to determine this..)
15. Transcode/finished (I guess this would presume you can watch TV and
transcode in the background- I don't know since I haven't used it..)

Let's see if anyone gets THIS inside joke:

How about fingering my coke machine so I can
tell when it runs out of diet coke?

I take that back. I broke down and looked it up: Carnegie Melon was the
first "fingerable" coke machine, not MIT (close second).

I'm guessing you were at CMU in the early 80's.

Let's see - wire an X10 sensor to the lines that power the buzzer?

That assumes you actually bother to take clothes out of the dryer before
it's time to wear them. ;-)

Of course, it alread does that. See the contrib/mythnotify/cidbcast
which proviedes Caller ID with name interface to the OSD.
