Worlds most craptacular GF card (Hardware Warning)
So I was building a new Linux box and decided to use a cheap MX type card on it as
it will probably do everything I want...just some videos, light 3d just to see it work, etc.

I purchased a Apollo MX440SE 64MB SDRAM card from newegg for $46, just the
bill...cheap and reasonable performance....

What a piece of shit, the card has a improper PCI ID (0x171, should be 0x173) and
runs HORRIBLE. Quake2 runs at ~30fps maximum, glxgears runs around 650fps,
MythTV gets pissed and hangs after a few seconds or a minute if I put it in window
mode.

Just for grins I put my 4200 in the same box while trying to debug: glxgears =
5500fps, Quake2 = 175fps and MythTV works (mostly).

I had seen people getting ~2Kfps in glxgears with MX cards and figured that was
enough horsepower for puttering around....this ain't that card.... The worst part is that
I must have thrown the original box out over the last couple of days and now I'm
guessing I'm stuck with it. I'll try newegg support out, but it would be a miracle if they
took it back.

Are you using the stock video drivers, or did you install the official
ones from Nvida?

Official, of course. I even went through the trouble of modifying the os-registery.c
file to try out some of the options in there...no luck.

Re: Worlds most craptacular GeForce card (Hardware Warning) [Resolution] [ In reply to ]
Pretty amazing news from newegg support. I told them of the status of this
card and they have offered to take it back and refund me fully.
Additionally, they are sending me my new 4200 2nd day free and I return the
crap card once I get the new one.

Many kudos to newegg service and support!

That's wierd performance indeed. I'm running a Pixelview GF4MX440 and it
runs like a charm, under Linux. Tuxracer (older version though) under
Windows98SE reaches 12-20fps at slightly above standard settings. Under
Linux it get's ~100fps even when I set it to draw the course 300m ahead. So
basicaly I can see the whole course magesticaly layed out in front of me
under Linux, and have polygon teardrops under Win98SE.

btw, the GF4MX cards have propietary TV-out chips. You won't be able to
tweak over-/underscan under Linux, AFAIK.
