Untranslatable strings - NEED YOUR INPUT...
Hi!

A few problems were found with some of the strings in 0.27 and I was
wondering what you would like to do.

Here is a short list of the problems which were found:

- A mention about a dependency between two settings is missing which
could lead to a non-functioning configuration. At a minimum the help
text should indicate that dependency.

- The description/explication on the use of a setting is incorrect.

- A new check was added to warn the user when he tries to do something
which could result in data loss (if he doesn't use the right option, if
the options are used as they should be there is no risk of that). The
message was added but is currently untranslatable.

- A new setting, which is not currently in 0.27 but might need to be
backported to it, was added in order to disable a possibly non-working
option. At the time of this writing the problem which required adding
this setting seems to have been solved but only time will tell.

- A typo was fixed in one of the themes we translate.

- The description of one of the theme we translate was changed.

All in all, that I know of (it's always difficult to say when themes are
involved, there are less than 10 strings which have problems.

The question now is would you like us to fix/add those strings so that
you can translate them or do we leave them untranslatable? If we apply
the full string freeze to the letter they should not be updated but not
giving you the choice to translate them is not a very good solution either.

I am now seeking your input on this... If enough of you agree that we
should fix those problems and *nobody* is against we will go ahead and
fix/add those new strings.

Please answer ASAP so that if you decide we should translate them
everybody will be able to find the time to translate them.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Nicolas

Re: Untranslatable strings - NEED YOUR INPUT... [ In reply to ]
Hi!

Thank you all who responded. I have now applied all the fixes mentioned
in my previous email and a few others I noticed while I was doing them.

- A mention about a dependency between two settings is missing which
could lead to a non-functioning configuration. At a minimum the help
text should indicate that dependency.

The text in question was

"VAAPI will attempt to use the graphics hardware to accelerate video
decoding."

The new text is now

"VAAPI will attempt to use the graphics hardware to accelerate video
decoding. REQUIRES OPENGL PAINTER."

- The description/explication on the use of a setting is incorrect.

The text in question was

"Set this to the actual network ID at your location, if you have a
provider that broadcasts a broken NIT. Leave at -1 if everything works
out of the box."

The new text is now

"If your provider has asked you to configure a specific network
identifier (Network_ID), enter it here. Leave it at -1 otherwise."

(The NIT wasn't broken per se, it just needs to be provided sometimes...)

Please note that Network_ID is the name of an identifier in the DVB's
Service Information standard specification and is frequently
untranslated (or translated but the English name is still provided) in
the providers support literature.

- A new check was added to warn the user when he tries to do something
which could result in data loss (if he doesn't use the right option, if
the options are used as they should be there is no risk of that). The
message was added but is currently untranslatable.

This is in MythMusic (the rest are in MythFrontend).

The text in question is

"Cannot import music from the music directory. You probably want to use
'Scan For New Music' instead."

While I was there I noticed that this wasn't translatable and made it
translatable:

"Copy CoverArt Failed.\nCopying to %1"
(%1 is the filename)

"%1 of %2"
(Current file copied, %1 is the current position of the file being
copied, %2 is the total number of files)

- A new setting, which is not currently in 0.27 but might need to be
backported to it, was added in order to disable a possibly non-working
option. At the time of this writing the problem which required adding
this setting seems to have been solved but only time will tell.

The text in question are

"Enable network access for interactive TV"

"If enabled, interactive TV applications (MHEG) will be able to access
interactive content over the Internet. This is used for BBC iPlayer."

- A typo was fixed in one of the themes we translate.

The text in question was

"No videos in library or files are being loaded...""

(Yep, there was a double quote (") at the end of the text that shouldn't
have been there.)

The new text is

"No videos in library or files are being loaded..."

(No redundant double quote (").)

- The description of one of the theme we translate was changed.

Originally there were two different strings for this theme depending on
whether you used master or fixes. There is now only this string:

"Blue-abstract is a modern looking theme meant for widescreen HD
displays. The blue background and the consistent layout makes it an
attractive and elegant looking theme. It also contains a custom menu."

(which is different from both, the last part changed...)

To fix those problems I had to re-extract the theme strings.

While I was there I removed

"Stati"
"Categorie"

since these were used by the old OSD menu editor.

It added

"Showing: %1"

and a few template strings. For those template strings we just need to
fill them in with Ctrl-B followed by Ctrl-Enter since there is nothing
we can actually translate in those:

"%EXTRA| %%ORIGIN%"
"%PROGRESS_TEXT% %PROGRESS%"
"%STARTDATE|, %%STARTTIME%% - |ENDTIME%"
"%STARTTIME%% - |ENDTIME%"
"%\"|SUBTITLE|\" %%00X00| %%(|ORIGINALAIRDATE|)\n%%YEARSTARS%"
"%CHANNELNUMBER|\n%%CALLSIGN%"
"%DESCRIPTION|\n%%ERRATA%"
"%director%"
"%year%"
"%channum% %callsign%"

The themers involved are now well aware that their changes, if they
involve regular strings or template strings which contain text which
need translation could break translations. This will, hopefully,
diminish the chances of having themes strings at the last minute...

I noticed another problem which we had for a while in two of the strings
we translate. We have already translated those and as such Qt Linguist
should propose you the previous translation in the "Phrases and guesses"
section.

The texts in question were

"The Cartesian latitude for your location. Use negative numbers for
southern and western coordinates."

"The Cartesian longitude for your location. Use negative numbers for
southern and western coordinates."

They have now been replaced by

"The Cartesian latitude for your location. Use negative numbers for
southern coordinates."

"The Cartesian longitude for your location. Use negative numbers for
western coordinates."

(Essentially what we need to do here is take our previous translations
and remove the direction that doesn't apply to a latitude or longitude.)

I fixed one more string while I was there since it was bound to be
eventually corrected and break our translations. There was a small
spacing issue with this string. This is something we already translated,
if it doesn't offer it in "Phrases and guesses" section please search
for the incorrect string and cut & paste your translation into the
correct string.

The text in question was

"Selects the situations where thescheduler will avoid assigning shows to
the same card if their end time and start time match. This will be
allowed when necessary in order to resolve conflicts."

The new text is

"Selects the situations where the scheduler will avoid assigning shows
to the same card if their end time and start time match. This will be
allowed when necessary in order to resolve conflicts."

If you notice any translation problem please let me know ASAP so that we
can try to fix them (hopefully without adding new strings).

Thank you!

Nicolas
