Apple TV 4th Gen with mythtv server
Hi,

I am planning to buy Apple TV 4th generation and jailbreak it to run media
server Kodi as a frontend and myth as a backend on the same box. Can anyone
please advice me is it possible to do that or do I have to use some other
backend ? Thanks

I haven’t heard of any jail break available for the 4th Gen. The last one that could be jail broken was the 2nd gen.

Thanks Wade.

According to this link
https://www.lifewire.com/comparing-models-of-apple-tv-1999427 looks like
4th gen can be jail broken, but I am not sure mythbackend can be installed
on that ? Thanks

I wasn’t aware of that. Doing some googling, it seems you’ll need to have a particular version of tvOS installed on it. If you are buying a new one tomorrow, you’ll probably be out of luck since it comes with tvOS 11, not 10.1 or earlier.

I’ve never heard of anyone creating MythTV anything for tvOS, there isn’t even an official frontend for iOS. Closest thing was Torc for iOS.

There's a very good mythtv frontend for the Apple TV 4 on the Apple store.
A 2s search on Google would have confirmed that.

There's even an entry on the mythtv wiki
https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Apple_TV

Thanks for the link but I am still confused about the myth backend, does
Apple TV support them or do I have to look for some other backend ? Thanks

No, it's just a frontend.
Re: Apple TV 4th Gen with mythtv server [ In reply to ]
Thanks Jean, can you please recommend a good compatible or equivalent as
mythbackend for Apple TV and kodi as frontend.

Thanks

I don't know of any backend that would run on a backend, nor do I think it
would be an okay solution even if it existed.
There's no storage, no extension (adding dvb card and so on)

I find the entire concept of attempting to install a backend in a device
such as an apple tv to be a waste of time that even if successful would be
mediocre at best.
Re: Apple TV 4th Gen with mythtv server [ In reply to ]
Thanks Jean, I do accept your point. We currently have a box myth box where
backend is myth and frontend is kodi but its been nearly 10 years old and
its time to update our box. We are considering resizing it to small factor
and that's where the Apple TV came to our mind. We also thought of
considering Intel Nuc with network tuner HD Homerun and external hard disk
but the box itself costs a lot.

Any idea about HD Home run connect, are they good ?

Thanks,
Rama

I'm considering doing the same - have two DVB-S cards in a physical
server, but looking to move to a new backend running as a VM in a pool.
This would go badly using physical cards, but a network tuner would
solve the problem.

Actually, you can network the physical tuners using minisatip or
tvheadend and SAT>IP protocol. MythTV does not yet support doing
tuning using the SAT>IP protocol, but that might be coming in v30. But
I have been able to network my DVB-S2 tuners using minisatip and some
Python software I wrote to create the channel and iptv_channel table
entries I needed. When I have some spare time, I am working on
generalising the Python a bit so that it will be able to be used by
other people too. But I am not there yet. Using minisatip allows me
to use the same tuners anywhere on my network, and also it does the
Sky TV decryption.

Nice - still requires a PC running somewhere though. A networked receiver
will play with VMs exactly the same, but will give HD and use less power.

Having just installed a TBS6209 8 tuner DVB-T2 card alongside my
TBS6909 8 tuner DVB-S2 card, I now also have DVB-T2 tuners via SAT>IP.
needed at least 4 DVB-T tuners since I started getting clashes when
Maori TV moved to a new mux, so I decided to have 5 so I could record
all muxes at once. That would have involved problems with getting
enough signal from my aerial to 5 single tuners at once. So getting
the TBS6209 which uses just one aerial input for all 8 tuners seemed
like a good idea.

Yes, it requires a PC, but then I need that anyway to get the
processor power to decode Sky (I can be recording up to 10 channels of
Sky at once during the pre- and post-roll overlap periods).

Thanks all for your info really appreciate it, I think I shall go with
Network tuner but I still need to figure out the hardware .

If a NUC is too expensive, get a chromebox, they sell on trademe for around
$2-300.

Vote for the Nvidia Shield - currently easily the best TV front-end media
box out.

You will need to order from Amazon/Ebay as no-one seems to be importing
them locally. But the non-hdd version can be had for $300 NZD mark.

There are some reasonable Chinese variants around but Updates/Frimware and
really knowing your SoC's is required in order to make a good choice.

If you want an economical kodi front end then buy an s905/s905x/s912
android box from china and put libreelec on it. I have three and they are
brilliant, and you cannot beat this price:

https://www.geekbuying.com/item/MECOOL-M8S-PRO-Plus-4K-TV-Box-381461.html

Also the Odroid C2 is a good choice.

With those chipsets you get 4k decoding.

Re: Apple TV 4th Gen with mythtv server [ In reply to ]
Not all of them have HDMI2.0b support or HDR - so it's a bit of crapshoot.
And the firmware updates are generally the issue rather than the SoCs.

But if you do go down the ali-express route look for:

10Bit HDR Support, VP Profile 2 (this is what Youtube HDR encodes in).
And Gigabit Ethernet

I am a fan of the Rk3399 based board like the firefly -

Unfortunately at the moment there is no HDR support under linux for any of
the drivers (closed or open). Intel is working on extensions for wayland,
and nvidia are implementing some deep-field extensions for glx surfaces -
but not even herculean compilation efforts building from working trees
renders a usable stack at the moment (I've tried)

Android on the other hand has several HDR graphics drivers. The Nvidia one
being the most feature complete. The Mali implementations are lacking and
require proprietary SoC add-on chips - which in turn means being limited to
the integrators firmware builds.
