As for the hardware - this is the 40 GB Seagate root drive I started with.
It was a year old at that point, and coupled with 3x 30GB Maxtor drives
for storage. Needless to add the Maxtors didn't live a year.

Amusingly I had a bunch of the bits to build the frontend for about a
year before I actually got around to assembling it.
