Recommendations for a new DVB-T tuner? (Not HDHR)
My HVR2200 (which I really liked) died and now it looks like my backup
USB tuner is dying. So I'm looking for recommendations for a new DVB-T
tuner. I know TBS has good Linux support. Anybody used the TBS7220? I'm
thinking of two of these with a 3-way splitter (one feed to the TV).
Strangely though the pic on buydvb.net shows what looks like a PCI
connector but it says "PCIe".

Any ideas where to buy a 3 way splitter?

Sorry. Please ignore comments/questions about the TBS7220. I believe it
has a PCIe x4 connector. I only have PCIe x1 slots so no it's go. Still
interested in recommendations for other tuners though.

Hi David,

Jaycar have a good selection of 5-900Mhz splitters which work fine on DVB-T:

I'm all-DVB-S these days, but I had a good run with Elgato USB DVB-T
tuners a few years back; they are mostly re-branded Hauppauge.

Cheers,
Jonathan

You picked the wrong card. The TBS7220 uses a mini-PCIe connector,
for small form factor PCs. You probably are wanting a normal PCIe bus
connector, such as a TBS6221 (single DVB-T2/T/C), TBS6281SE (dual
DVB-T2/T/C) or TBS6205 (quad DVB-T2/T/C). All of those cards are
standard PCIe x1 cards.

Be aware that for a lot of TBS cards, you have to compile the TBS
drivers every time the kernel is updated. That process installs a
full set of V4L drivers, overwriting the standard kernel ones, so if
you have other V4L devices, it is possible the TBS versions of the
drivers for them will be different (usually a bit out of date). It is
not difficult to do, but has nuisance value (an extra reboot is
required). The Linux support by TBS does seem to be pretty good
though.

I think Jaycar is OK for run of the mill stuff but a 3 way splitter is a
little unusual. Don't think they stock them.

Elgato diversity looks interesting and can be bought for a reasonable
price but not sure if it is supported in Linux and/or if the diversity
function is supported.

Yes, I compiled the V4L lib a few times when I originally got the
HVR2200 so I'm OK with that if it's necessary. I suspect with a little
study I could figure out which kernel modules needed updating and just
recompile those instead of the entire V4L lib.

That's one of the models I used to use. Works out of the box on Linux; it
just shows up as two separate tuners. As dual tuners they work fine as long
as you have moderate-good signal strength.

The diversity stuff is some kind of magical fairy-dust that only works with
the Elgato proprietary software.

What about the Leadtek Winfast DTV1000 S? PB Tech have these at a not
too horrific price.

Thanks Johnathan. My googlefu failed when I looked for the diversity
model on linuxtv. Good to know it works. I would think it should work at
least as well, if not better than, a typical dual tuner card/stick
because it has two RF inputs and therefore no internal splitter loss. My
HVR2200 dual tuner was OK with a cheap indoor antenna so the eyetv
should also cope unless it has a truly terrible RF front end.

In a former life I was a microwave system engineer so the diversity
feature appeals to me but I can live without it. Actually I probably can
use it since I have a Mac Mini which I believe supports the Elgato software.

Wikipedia
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_Mini_Card) says
you can buy passive PCIe Mini to PCIe adapters. Not that I think I will
do this but a useful option to know.

Surprisingly Bunnings has a cheap 3 way splitter:

I am interested to know why you do not want HDHR units.
I recently installed one and it was so simple.

A bit cheaper than Bunnings but could be a long delivery delay. Not
saying delivery would be slow but definitely slower than going to Bunnings.

Main reason is price. I can get the Elgato dual tuner for $130. I'm not
worried about install issues. I was happy to patch the firmware for my
HVR2200 to enable analogue to MPEG conversion so I don't fear a bit of
driver or firmware hacking if necessary (which it shouldn't be with the
Elgato unit).

Also not keen on losing support for mhegepgsnoop (which I wrote). This
needs a device to talk to which isn't there with an HDHR. There is
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/dvbhdhomerun/?source=directory) a
sourceforge project to make the HDHR look like a device but I'm not sure
it works with current HDHR hardware/firmware. I know there are other
options to get a 7 day EPG but mhegepgsnoop just works for me and I
don't need any of the extra features with the other options.

Don't get me wrong. The HDHR is a very nice unit but it just doesn't
suit me at the moment.

Ah yes, I did read that. However if you dig a bit deeper it looks like
the kernel driver does in fact support it as of about kernel 2.6.32
(from memory). I also have the required firmware (assuming current
hardware hasn't changed too much) and I have seen posts where others got
it working so I believe it definitely can be made to work in Linux. And
price is low enough that I would give it a go if that was the only
option and be prepared to take a loss if it didn't work. I think I will
go with the Elgato now.
