nvidia chipset - any problems with 2.6 ?
I have to upgrade my 700Mhz PIII to run my wifes new graphical adventure
game :-)
(dual boot windows 2000 + Gentoo).

Being financially challenged I have narrowed it down to a bargain
package of ...

A Biostar M7NCD Socket A Motherboard w/the nVidia nForce2 400/MCP
chipset + Athlon XP3000+ 333FSB ...

http://tekgems.com/Products/et-9267-mbb-m7ncd-n.htm
http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=040904110845671&moduleno=-987

However something is nagging at me that there are problems with nVidia
chipsets with Linux ? something about DMA problems with the north /
south bridges ?

Is there still a problem with the 2.6 kernel, has anyone had experience
of this motherboard ?

Cheers
Dave

You need to review the archives and/or forum for this topic. I no
longer have an nvidia card. As I remember it, the latest (maybe
still~x86) nvidia packages work pretty well wil 2.6, but framebuffer
doesn't work at all except for vesa mode.

I have no problems running that board w/ Athlon XP 2500+
I'm using a pre-fab mandrake kernel-source rpm though. (2.6.3....)
(I had trouble getting a gentoo kernel running with it)
Machine runs smooth, fast and stable. Love it!

Microsoft is not the answer.
Microsoft is the question.
Linux is the answer.

I'm running 2.6, and have had trouble with me Asus a7n8x. It uses an
nforce2, and I get cdrom drive errors on that machine (across two
completely separate gentoo, and one arch linux instance). The drive
works fine in windows and in other machines in linux, so I'd chalk it up
to the nvidia support in the kernel.

I am a proud owner of an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe motherboard. I am using
2.6.7-gentoo-r14 kernel with APIC and APCI enabled without any problems.

Best regards,
Boris.

Hi,

you should be able to use APIC&ACPI. Some people in the nv-forum claim, that
using ACPI pm timer instead of tsc saved them from lockups.

I had none, since I went from via to sis mainbords.
