can anybody recommend any VoIP package?
Has anybody good luck with any gentoo VoIP package?

I imagine the skype package is binary, right?

I've tried linphone and some others over the years, but they didn't
perform acceptably.  Has there been any progress in that regard?

I would put my vote on Mumble. It's easy, lightweight, libre software, secure, good quality and available on pretty much every platform.
