Installation on a DS20
Hi all,

I'm trying to install on a DS20, everything went OK until I rebooted and
I got a kernel panic almost straight away. I can't really read the
interesting part of the panic as it scrolls off the screen far too
quickly and if there's a way to scroll up and read it I don't know it.

I've got another DS20 running gentoo via the now defunct alpha-sources
so I'm guessing it could be something to do with the 2.6 kernel on this
machine?

Any ideas?

TIA

Hi Grant,

If you reached the level that your box boots up with a 2.6 kernel,
then the panic might not have to do with the problem other users faced.
I faced the fact that my DS20e's didnt event boot with a 2.6 kernel,
the system just froze at the SRM.
Since those boxed were needed in a production-environment, I switched back
to kernel 2.4 ( vanilla-sources ).
So the advice I can give is to use a 2.4 kernel as well, as during the
previous weeks no one reported a succesfull installation of a 2.6 kernel
on this mailinglist.

My DS20 is running a vanilla 2.6 kernel since march 2005 and I didn't
have any particular problem :
# uname -a
Linux clairett 2.6.11.8 #1 SMP Mon Aug 1 13:38:00 CEST 2005 alpha EV6
GNU/Linux
# uptime
14:34:57 up 53 days, 49 min, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.07

Attached to this mail is the kernel config I'm using

Just for the sake of collecting data on this issue,
for people who have not been able to boot a 2.6 kernel
so far, what kind of graphics cards do you have in
your machines?

Thanks, switching to a 2.4 kernel (when I figured out that I needed to
change profile to get one :) ) has worked for me.

Thanks again,

Grant

I definetly envy you all! Here I cannot make it run (I'm thinking
about switching to netbsd...) this damn DS25! One of these days
you'll hear about a flying alpha (36 kg out of the window).
I tried to install gentoo 2005.0, stage1, 2.4 profile and latest
portage and it stops during bootstrap.

The DS25 is pretty new and iirc, has a different
chipset than the DS20 or DS20E . Let me ask around and
see what special configuration it might need, if any.

The machine I've been having trouble has an ELSA Gloria Synergy card
- if you need more info let me know and I'll see what I can extract.

Cheers,

Hi Jeff,

just like the Boxes of Grant, my DS20s contain ELSA Synergy cards as well.
