DS25 not booting at all... I'm going mad!
Hi folks, let me keep you updated on what's going on with this damn
DS25... After compiling everything it simply does not boot! I also
tried to create an initrd (installing all by hand, since genkernel
goes into errors I couldn't fix) but nothing changes. Following all
the instruction from the Gentoo Handbook leads me to a

starting kernel 2.6.14-rc1-vanilla.gz with arguments root=/dev/sda3
initrd=/initrd-2.6.14-rc1=vanilla.img rw

at the SRM/aboot prompt, but it freezes there...
I really cannot see how to go on with this, I'm thinking to give up
and keep a redhat 7.2 (at least it works...).

Don't give up, you are about to get it;-) Otherwise I'll take the
maschine:-)

If it freeses on boot, it will freese with an initrd too. Initrd can't
help much there.
So what I would try is to recompile the kernel with processor type
set as "generic alpha". I've seen a lot of reports that a specialised
(2.6) kernel could not be booted.
And please try with a kernel which is marked stable e.g. 2.6.12.5.

In your other post you were confused about the LABEL's in the redhat's
fstab.
Redhat uses e2label to Label the partitions and mounts the partitions
with the matching label and not with the devise name. So you can move
around the partitions and it will always(?) mount the right partition on
the right mount point. I always hated it;-)

If you are willing to try further with your nice alpha, it would
be helpful if you post your .config and the exactly messages which you
are seeing.

Hi Davide,

Exactly the same happens on my DS20s when booting a kernel from tree 2.6, so my advice is to use a kernel from tree 2.4, vanilla sources.
Genkernel wouldnt want to work on my boxes as well so I manually configured the kernel.
