Gentoo on Alpha DS25
Hi all,
we are trying to install Gentoo on an Alpha Server DS25, using the universal
CD for Alpha.
We are not able to install since the kernel doesn't boot.
We will try to build a Gentoo installation CD starting from a Red Hat
already installed.
Anyone already tried that?
Anyone any suggestion for kernel compile?
Thanks

Hi Valerio.

Have you tried booting the 2.4 kernel? boot <cd-device> -fl 1. As far as
I know the 2.4 kernel should work fine on your DS25. Alternatively you
can use the 1.4rcX livecd found in /experimental with the 2005.0 stages,
following the handbook as usual.

If that doesn't work for some reason, there's an alternative
installation guide on http://www.gentoo.org that shows how to do various
'alternative' types of installation.

Hope this helps.

There seems to be scattered reports of people not
being able to boot the 2005.0 LiveCD. It would be
great if we could all collaborate and see if there is
something in common in all these cases. I'm willing to
do my part, but I'll probably need some guidance
debugging the boot process. I have access to two
machines I have not been able to boot 2005.0 on: an
old XL366 ("white box", MILO only) and a not quite as
old XP1000 500Mhz (currently running Tru64 UNIX). Both
boxes hang during boot at roughly the same place,
though I am not sure where exactly.

The basic problem is that a GENERIC kernel doesn't work on a variety
of machines. Instead you need to build a specific kernel, such as
DP264. It would be great to collect the list into a Gentoo bug so we
could be more specific, though. I'm sure that upstream would be happy
if we could get closer to the problem.

I've tried the 2.6 kernel, the 2.4, the livecd. But they don't boot. I've
tried many debian but they don't boot either. Obviolusy I tried from SRM
with 'boot dqa0 -fl i'. The only one that boots is the officially supported,
the RedHat 7.2. Now I managed to boot with the RedHat kernel and bootloader,
using the gentoo universal CD.
Do you think I should give a feedback about my results?
Thanks

Valerio,

I faced a similar problem when trying to boot DS20e's with the 2005.0
LiveCD.
It booted smoothly with the 2004.3 and the installation went just fine. If
you didnt suceed
in installing Gentoo after booting from the RedHat-CD, then try the 2004.3
LiveCD.

Jeff,

I'd be glad to share the experiences I made with the 2005.0 LiveCD not
booting at all.
I tried to boot two DS20e ( each 1x500MHz; one running Tru64 at time of
installation, the other one Gentoo )
with the 2005.0 LiveCD, but the Systems stuck in the SRM, not showing
anything of the actual boot process.
Haven't tried the 2.4 Kernel, just the 2.6, but if its of any use, I'll
try booting the 2.4 Kernel as well,
since those systems wont be in production before the end of June 2005.

so long,

Nils

Re: Gentoo on Alpha DS25 [ In reply to ]
Well, actually we have 2 DS25. One with RedHat 7.2 (not for long time
hopefully). The other spare. I could try to build a kernel from RedHat 7.2
and use it with gentoo.
But I need more details, the kernel that I am compiling are not booting at
all (I tried with 2.6.11 and 2.4.30)! For example what you mean by 'specific
kernel DP264'?
Thanks
