[Bug 2908] New: Option to randomise the use of IPv4 and IPv6
https://bugs.exim.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2908

Bug ID: 2908
Summary: Option to randomise the use of IPv4 and IPv6
Product: Exim
Version: N/A
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
Severity: wishlist
Priority: medium
Component: Transports
Assignee: unallocated@exim.org
Reporter: bugzilla.exim.simon@arlott.org
CC: exim-dev@exim.org

There's hosts_randomize to randomise the order of hosts, and ipv4_prefer to use
IPv4 before IPv6 but there's no option to randomise whether IPv4 or IPv6 is
used.

The reputation of MTAs is often based on its IP address. Hosts with both IPv4
and IPv6 addresses are therefore likely to have two independent reputations.

By preferring one address family over another that reputation can suddenly
change when a retry occurs on the non-preferred address family. It should be
possible to use both IPv4 and IPv6 equally to avoid this problem.

This could improve the adoption of IPv6 for sending email because it avoids the
problems that can occur from rarely using the alternative IPv4 address.
