Although that doc is talking about installing & running it on other OS's
like Linux etc, the majority of the usage and program description pages
apply to all OS's.

Does clamd scan files used on the hard disk as they get used or do I
need to schedule daily hard disk scans?

What I suppose I'm asking is the best practice for using clamd to
protect a computer.

in Windows, clamd runs a service(daemon) which scans downloads and
emails like Norton Internet Security.

edited the clamd.conf

run "clamd -install"

set the service to automatic and started the service.



I would appreciate knowing what clamd actually does.

Will it scan every file opened by the user or do I need to run another
file as well?

There is no on-access scanning with the Windows version, so schedule scans if you want
to. (Clamd by itself doesn't scan anything.)

Clamd is a fast memory-resident scanner which holds all the signature definitions in
memory. To use it you need to run clamdscan or another application which uses the clamd
interface.

You may find the FAQ section at clamwin.com helpful for a starter:

Note: although the clamwin product is kept up-to-date, it does not include
clamd/clamdscan.

Bear in mind that Clamav is designed primarily as a gateway mail-scanner, and you may
find that if you want to install protection on a user's workstation, there are other
products specifically designed for that job. (Some of them at the same price as Clamav.)

Personally, I use clamav at the mail server, and a different A/V system on end-user
machines.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the information, I will look for clamdscan and schedule
scans to run every couple of hours.

I have a number of windows server 2003 that I'm trying to protect
without using commercial software.
I'm using esva (a mailscanner implementation) to protect my mail
servers, but I need something for the file systems of my servers.

I would appreciate ideas on how people are doing this without using
commercial software.
