Connect multiple upstreams of a single optical node with the same downstream
Dear all,

I am trying in a lab with a Cisco uBR-7114 router to assign to an HFC
node one downstream and two upstreams (on different frequencies). My
wish was that with such a configuration the CMTS would assign every 2 CM
on one upstream (upstream 0) and every 2 other CM on the second upstream
(upstream 1).

After trials in my lab, I have no success. Do you know if this Cisco uBR
can support such a fonctionality ? If yes, do you have an idea how to
configure it in order to dynamically assign one upstream (or one
frequency, if you prefer) to a modem at the initialization phase ?

Last question: Would I have the same problem, if I were using uBR7206
routers (with MC16C or MC28S cards) ?

I know it is easy to do it with two different downstreams with a config
file assigning the modem one or the other downstream, but I can not
realize my idea with one downstream and two upstreams.

Thank you for your answers,
Yann Gauteron

Hello Yann,

You are probably looking for the Cable Load Balancing
feature which can evenly distribute CMs across
multiple upstreams statically (at registration time)
or dynamically (based on interface load).

Please take a look at the following link and see if it
helps you out:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/cable/ps2217/products_feature_guide09186a00801b17f2.html

Unfortunately this feature is only supported on the
uBR7246VXR and uBR10012 CMTSs, not the uBR7100.

By the way, if you want to do this statically via the
DOCSIS configuration file you can use the "Upstream
Channel ID" field in the configurator to assign CMs to
a particular upstream port. But this does not scale
too well.

Kind Regards,
Adeel.

I think there are two different ways to do this; the DOCSIS way and the
Cisco way. The DOCSIS way is to use the cablemodem config file to set the
upstream channel. You could put residential on one channel and business
on another, or voice, etc. Your provisioning system makes the
decisions but you can't change (load-balance) them very easily. The Cisco
way is dynamic and doesn't require the modems to know. I believe you have
to run something in the 12.2(15)BC series. All of the modems come up on
the first frequency, but some percentage (configurable) will get a message
to move to the second channel. I believe Cisco has other strategies as
well, but I didn't see an immediate need for them. I'll find the docs
later if you're interested, but it will have to wait for coffee.
As for the 7114 being able to support two upstreams... I think it
should work _if_ the right IOS version 12.2.15BC can be loaded. I know
for sure that it works with 7246's with MC-28U.

Hope that helps,

Hi Adeel and Ben,

Thanks for the information.

So it seems it is possible on Cisco uBR7246VXR. I'll try to make my lab
with such a machine, both our uBR7246 and the uBR7114 are running IOS
12.2(15)BC2.

Unfortunatelly, I can't access the document linked by Adeel, as I don't
have a privileged account on the Cisco website !

Best regards,
Yann
